Mediterranean Grottos and Phoenician Maritime Religion

by Mark Christian

My maiden voyage into the research of maritime religion, this study was researched and completed in August 2011. (It is unrelated to my Vanderbilt dissertation completed in December 2011.) The essay will appear in "Mélanges Josette Elayi: Phéniciens d'Orient et d'Occident," edited by André Lemaire.

Abstract:
Study looks into expressions of maritime religion at Phoenician-Punic coastal shrines and considers them opposite inland manifestations in mainland Phoenicia and South Lebanon. Historical, archaeological, and sociopolitical approaches bring shape and focus to the often diverging evidence.

Keywords: Tanit, Astarte, Melqart, Grotta Regina, Es Cuyam, graffito cave art, maritime religion, Umm el-Amed

I have found the work of the following authors particularly helpful:
Edward Lipínski, Sergio Ribichini, J. Elayi, Corinne Bonnet, H. Niehr, G. Falsone, P. Xella, C. Bondì, F. Briquel-Chatonnet, Aaron Brody, P. Bartoloni, Jens Kamlah, J. D. Grainger, S. F. Falconer and S. H. Savage.

I am writing a second paper on this topic that will presented at the 2012 ISBL meeting in Amsterdam, Expressions of Religion program unit. Details on that to follow soon. Bibliographic suggestions in this new venture appreciated.
