This chapter explores the issue of interdisciplinarity - a key dimension of social science research sponsored by the... more This chapter explores the issue of interdisciplinarity - a key dimension of social science research sponsored by the European Union - from the point of view of researchers who led and coordinated EU funded social science projects. The European researchers’ understandings and experiences of interdisciplinarity emerged from analyses of two distinct data sources: first, interventions made by 29 project coordinators during six one-day group discussions (GD) held in various parts of Europe during the autumn of 2002; and second, responses provided by a representative sample of 88 coordinators to several closed-item and open-item questions regarding interdisciplinarity that were part of a survey distributed during the same period (for additional details, see the Methodology section below).
