We present a theoretical model on the processes that mediate and moderate the diversity-performance relationship. Past research on this topic – for example the categorization elaboration model (van Knippenberg et al., 2004) – has often focused on information elaboration as mediator. Complementing this cognitive perspective, we propose that group diversity can also stimulate group members to engage with each other emotionally, resulting in higher levels of empathy – an emotional state which arises from the comprehension and apprehension of fellow group members’ emotional state. Empathy, in turn, is likely to enhance performance through processes within a single group member and through processes between group members. At the core of the model lies the proposition that group- as well as individual-level empathy mediate the relationship between diversity of organizational units and the performance of individual members and groups at large (multilevel mediation). Furthermore, we specify moderating conditions for the relationship between diversity and empathy. Diversity beliefs and diversity climates are introduced as second-order moderators.

Critical orthodoxies around the multi-camera television studio characterise it as a ‘theatrical’ space, driven by dialogue and performance. Troy Kennedy Martin (1964) decried television drama’s essential naturalism, demanding a more filmic form of drama in a polemic which has strongly influenced critical thinking on multi-camera studio television. Caughie (2000) suggests that Armchair Theatre (ABC TV, 1956-68) created a ‘space for acting’ with ambitious camera movements within that space, but in the main, studio is seen as a constraining and interiorising dramatic site, in thrall to liveness and reliant on theatrical unities. This paper draws on research at the BBC Written Archives to extend current understanding of the determinants working upon multi-camera studio television up to and into the 1970s. Characterising studio as a Bourdieuian (1998) ‘force-field’, it shows how the performers’ union Equity insisted on preserving continuous performance as a specific feature of television drama. While other determinants (technical, institutional and economic) of course come into play, Equity’s insistence on ‘theatrical’ continuous performance inhibited the narrative and aesthetic possibilities of studio drama, resisted the move to rehearse-record studio taping, and delayed the turn to all-film drama production at the BBC. Drawing on key case studies which acted as contentious ‘test cases’ for negotiations, this paper explores tensions between institutional, artistic and external determinants, complicating technologically determinist accounts to argue for a greater understanding of the role of Equity in dictating arrangement of space and material conditions of production in the multi-camera studio paradigm.

The terms performance and performativity have garnered an increased importance in the fields of visual and media arts, humanities and the technosciences, signalling an epistemological shift from representational to performative modes of knowledge and experience production. This paper traces the terms performance and performativity — historically and conceptually — within the broad field of performance (linguistics, sociology, anthropology, theatre, dance, music and performance art) to extend their meaning(s) to the fields of technoscience and wearables. It aims to posit that a coupling of wearables technology and performativity is not only (a) crucial to an understanding of the materiality of the wearable object and its social practice, but (b) also offers new grounds for a repositioning of research within the fields of wearables and performance.

In this paper we will present a piece of the analysis of interviews realized to users of Telephone calling shops in Barcelona, Manchester and Milan. The emphasis has been put in the analysis of the emotions tied to the use of ICT in these specific spaces. We will focus on understanding these spaces as public spaces in continuous movement and evolution, which generate emotions strictly related to them. Using the concept of performance, we explore how speech creates a need for the construction of particular emotions, which do not exist before they performance.

Nowadays, with the advent of cloud computing a new concept of database backup emerges. The paper presents the possibility of making backup copies of data in the cloud. We are mainly focused on performance and economic issues of making backups in the cloud in comparison to traditional backups. We tested the performance and overall costs of making backup copies of data in Oracle database using Amazon S3 and EC2 cloud services. The costs estimation was performed on the basis of the prices published on Amazon S3 and Amazon EC2 sites.

Methods: Sixty-one final year dental students at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Malaya in Malaysia were administered a Multiple Intelligence Inventory [(MII), David Larear, 1991)] after their final written examinations. MII comprised 80 4-point likert items assessing eight types of multiple intelligences: Verbal/Linguistic, Visual Spatial, Logical Mathematical, Musical Rhythmic, Intra Personal, Body Kinesthetic, Inter Personal and Naturalist. These intelligences were correlated with six academic performance scores: Amalgam Class II, Composite, Crown & Bridge, Endodontic, Problem Based Learning and the Final Written Exam. The data were analysed by Pearson Product Moment Correlation and t-test. Results: Significant correlations were found between Intrapersonal intelligence and Composite (r = .32; p < .05) and between Body Kinesthetic and Composite scores (r = .26; p < .05). High Amalgam Class II scorers obtained significantly higher scores on Intrapersonal Intelligence than low scorers (t = 2.49; p < .05). High Composite scorers have significantly higher Body Kinesthetic intelligence than low scorers (t = .29; p < .05). Low endodontic scorers obtained significantly higher scores on Visual Spatial intelligence than high scorers (t = 2.06; p < .05). High PBL scorers obtained significantly higher Interpersonal (t = 2.06; p < .05) and Naturalist Intelligence (t = 3.57; p < .05) than low scorers. Conclusions: There appears to be no significant correlations between the various types of multiple intelligences and achievement in dentistry except for the correlations between Composite scores and Intrapersonal and Body Kinesthetic Intelligence. Generally, there were no significant multiple intelligence differences among high and low performers.

Purpose – This paper, anchored in the resource-based view of the firm, attempts to develop linkages between firm-level resources, Porter's competitive strategy space and firm performance and explores them in the context of a new industry – the marketing technology industry.
Design/methodology/approach – In the marketing technology industry the authors classify resource configurations (generalists, specialists, innovators) which group firms with distinctive competences on similar resource dimensions. They then map these firm-level resource configurations onto their respective optimal strategies in the industry's competitive strategy space.
Findings – The major findings are: some firms that are close together in strategy space vary in performance; some firms that are close together in strategy space belong to quite different resource configurations; firms that belong to the same resource configuration (i.e. are close together in resource space and distant from others) vary in performance; given the origin (i.e. resource configuration) of a new entrant there exists an optimal strategy that can be theoretically defined; and corresponding to each resource configuration there seems to exist a unique optimal region in strategy space.
Originality/value – It is one of few attempts to empirically explore the parallels between firm level resource-based and industry level competitive strategies.

Server consolidation achieves energy efficiency by enabling multiple instantiations of operating systems (OSes) to run simultaneously on a single physical machine. While, live migration of virtual machine can transfer the virtual machine workload from one physical machine to another without interrupting service. However, both the two technologies have their own performance overheads. There is a tradeoff between the performance and energy efficiency. In this paper, we study the energy efficiency from the performance perspective. Firstly, we present a virtual machine based energy-efficient data center architecture for cloud computing. Then we investigate the potential performance overheads caused by server consolidation and live migration of virtual machine technology. Experimental results show that both the two technologies can effectively implement energy-saving goals with little performance overheads. Efficient consolidation and migration strategies can improve the energy efficiency.
