Just Institutions after Genocide: Ricoeur's 'Little Ethics' and the Case of Armenia

First, I will describe what I mean by ‘just institutions’, in which both terms are equally valid and equally problematic. There is no justice without institutions and there are no institutions without justice. Yet it is scarcely realistic to claim that all institutions are just. However, the goal and aim of justice is necessary. Second, I will give a brief outline of the history of political philosophy central to the argument I am making here, namely, that for a democracy to thrive it must ‘aim at the Good Life with and for Others in Just Institutions’ (see Ricoeur's Oneself as Another, 169-296). Just as it is necessary to examine the development and history of the polis, republic, and nation-state to comprehend where a country is now, so it is necessary to look briefly at the history of the concept of justice, especially with regards to intentions and motivations. Third, I will speculatively try to apply this account to the case of Armenia. I say speculative because I am aware how difficult, complicated and messy it is to apply theories to particular cases. Hence, it is in this third part that I am most likely to blunder. However, following Socrates’ cliché of ‘know thyself’, and as acting and suffering subjects, we should undertake the challenge of moral and political self-reflection and questioning necessary for a thriving eudaimoniac democracy.

This paper focuses on the conception of metaphor in linguistics (the primary theoretical niche of the Handbook of Pragmatics), and, to a lesser extent, philosophical theories of metaphor (philosophy being the first field in which metaphor came to be looked at).
In the linguistic study of metaphor as a whole, two general aspects are important: (i) types of metaphors, i.e. the recognition and classification of different categories of metaphors as linguistic expressions; and (ii) theories of metaphor, i.e. the definition and explanation of metaphor as a linguistic process. This paper focuses on the first aspect, since extensive treatments of the different ways in which metaphors can be classified are relatively rare in the literature on metaphor, while distinctions and relations between theoretical frameworks have often been highlighted (cf. below), albeit not often in a comprehensive manner.
This paper is organized as follows. In section 2, the variation between major types of linguistic approaches to metaphor will cursorily be looked at. Section 3, which forms the greater part of this paper, discusses a number of different classifications of metaphor. After this discussion, these typologies of metaphor are placed in a larger framework explaining the variation between them (§ 4). The paper ends with a summary of a number of further issues which have come to be highlighted in relation to specific types of metaphors, or in relation to particular perspectives on the classification of metaphor types (§ 5).

"What is the central myth of Christianity - and why?"
The article reflects upon what the central
myth of Christian religion is, and why it is so.
It takes as its starting-point the concept of
‘broken myth’ as a central characteristic of
Biblical religion, and inquires after the cen-
tral ‘broken myth’ of Christianity. From a dis-
course-sensitive approach to Biblical theology
(Ricoeur), it goes on to find in newer trinitar-
ian theology (Rahner, Jüngel, Jenson) an
important extension of the continuous break-
ing of the myth in Biblical discourse, but also
the continuous retention of myth in Christi-
anity’s talk of God.
