This study examines the ways in which the dream manual was materially bound together with collections of early Italian visionary literature. The Somniale Danielis was a widely circulated dream manual in the late Middle Ages. It guided the interpretation of dreams and also served as an important tool in the understanding of medieval literary dreams. Thus it is an important aid in the identification and description of traditional dream topoi. The entries of the dream-book represent a framework within which medieval vision poetry develops its network of images and motifs. In a larger sense, the medieval miscellany often provides us insights into the “utility” of common texts at diverse levels of reception and use. These usually thematic collections made by copyists at the request of a reader or a user not only supply us with little-known texts excluded from codices arranged by author or genre, but also give us a view into how different cultures associated diverse texts.
Since different versions of the manual were produced often for “local purposes”, this study provides diplomatic-interpretative editions of five representative texts of the Somniale Danielis in Latin and Italian in the context of medieval and humanist literary miscellanies. In addition to a study of the cultural contexts in which we find these versions of the Somniale, this study also offers a synoptic edition of the five texts with a focus on the diverse terms that are used to convey key concepts of medieval dream manuals. From this same comparative apparatus, the final part of the dissertation includes an inventory of dream symbols.

Orderic Vitalis:
New Perspectives on the Historian and His World
(9-11 April 2013, St John’s College, University of Durham)
The organising committee of the Durham University Institute for Medieval and Renaissance Studies conference 'Orderic Vitalis: New Perspectives on the historian and his world' invite abstracts from prospective speakers. This event, funded by the Durham University IMRS, will provide a forum for the dissemination of new research into the life and works of the monastic scholar, Orderic Vitalis. With plans already in place to publish a 'companion' volume on Orderic, this conference will aim to re-invigorate existing work and open new lines of research around a figure whose legacy has proven vital to scholars of the Anglo-Norman world.
While the conference welcomes papers on a wide scope of topics, we particularly invite abstracts for papers relating to the following areas:
•The manuscript history of Orderic's Historia ecclesiastica.
•Orderic's scholarly and scribal career away from the Historia ecclesiastica.
•Orderic’s travels, administrative activities, and studies away from Saint-Évroul.
•Orderic’s world view and his networks of knowledge-exchange and transfer.
•The 'rediscovery' of the Historia ecclesiastica by early modern audiences, and Orderic's subsequent influence on the development of Anglo-Norman studies.
Prospective speakers are invited to submit abstracts of between 250-300 words, and should also include their contact details (name, affiliation, e-mail address). The deadline for submissions is 1 September 2012. Limited bursaries towards travel costs will be offered to postgraduate speakers. If you wish to apply for one of these, please indicate this when submitting an abstract.

The monograph "Michael, the celestial warrior. The Abbey of St. Michael the Archangel in Cervignano of Friuli. The history, the digging, the worship" - published in 2010 - contains the proceedings of the homonymous conference held in Cervignano (Udine) at the end of September 2008 on the initiative of the Aquileia Archaeological Group. On pages 188-217, the author of the essay "Historical documents on the 'Abbey' of St. Michael of Cervignano" analyzes the (few) testimonies related to the michaelic 'monasterium' riverside Ausa, the "castrum Ciruiganum" and the surrounding 'silva', the "villa de Siruiana", the 'centa' encircling the 'plebs' with its 'platea', and the "Insula Cirvignani"; also talking about a possible mention of that 'monasterium' in the eighth century, about the ancient (bell) tower, about the presumed "little church" of the eleventh century, about the remains of mosaic floors, about the ambiguities of the term 'monasterium' before the twelfth century and finally about the main stages in the history of the local 'pieve' of St. Michael the Archangel

Promoted since 2004 by the Archaeological Group of Aquileia in collaboration with the Superintendent for National Monuments, the Project entitled “The Christ of the Countess” aimed to valorize the Romanesque crucifix located and preserved in the chapel of the Villa Bresciani in Cervignano del Friuli (Udine, Italy). At the same time, some other studies concerned the same sculptural piece of art, at least in part. Taking a cue from these publications, here the author represents the most important documentary sources as well as the innovative contributions that emerged from the original project about dating, production field, patronage, original location and epoch of relocation; furthermore he assesses the possible alternatives.

This article in French questions the implantation of Jean Miélot and his works in the environment of the court of Burgundy. I start from the observation that in spite of the enormous variety of interesting texts that Miélot has left us, it seems that he did not meet much success during his own life time. Many of his texts survive only in one or two copies and few contemporary libraries contained his books.
There are two questions to be asked : in the first place if we should see Miélot as an isolated author or as a writer who was well integrated in an environment of book producers at the Burgundian court, and in the second place if his works did indeed not meet much success or if they were more widely read than we think. Some investigations in the field of the handwriting and the decoration of the Miélot manuscripts confirm the idea that he was not an isolated writer, but on the contrary well integrated in a network of producers of books for the Burgundian court. We can suppose close ties with colleagues, especially with David Aubert.
An overview of the fifteenth-century owners of manuscripts containing Miélot's texts shows that his readers were limited to a very small circle of the ducal family and of several members of the high nobility at the Burgundian court. His texts were indeed as good as not spread to other social groups, nor to other geographical areas. Jean Miélot is an original and interesting fifteenth century figure and combined codicological, paleographical, textual, and stylistic research can offer us new insights in his place and his work.

Suciu Thomassen Offprint

I recently edited together with Einar Thomassen a parchment folio owned by the Norwegian collector Martin Schøyen. The Schøyen leaf (MS 1991) was immediately followed in the codex by another dismembered fragment which ended up in the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris. They seem to belong to an unknown apocryphal writing, although the echoes it contains of fifth century Christological debates should warn against regarding it as an early document.
