I start with a literature review on luthiery in Palermo, comprising a brief description and analysis of the texts I have found (Chapter 1). Chapter 2 recounts my field research, undertaken between 2002 and 2004. It contains a census of the currently active luthiers, snapshots of those which I have either interviewed personally or have had notice of and ends with a detailed description of 4 luthiers, each representing one of the 4 typologies operating in the city. Chapter 3 is entitled "main issues" and is comprised of 5 sections analysing the localization, typology and visibility of luthiers. It also covers the relationship between the artisan class, luthiers and musicians as well as the existence of a historic memory and group identity among luthiers. The chapter ends with a broad portrait of the identity, character and evolution of luthiery production in Palermo. Chapter 4 contains the conclusions of my study. The appendices comprise summaries and literal transcriptions of interviews to luthiers (1), interviews to persons who have either researched luthiery in the city or have had contact with local luthiers (2) and other documents and evidence regarding luthiery (3). The appendix is completed by nine pages of photographs, both in black and white (historical) and in colour (by the author).

This is already an instrument of modern features, not showing any resemblance with the characteristic of 17th- and 18th-century Iberian organ building.
