Seen by:Heritage in Greece. The national narrative told by the Greek World Heritage List
Master Thesis

Although it is a highly political matter, the outcome of this process is supposed to be a reflection of the history of all the Greeks. The way in which this is chosen and what is in the first place called heritage; what is preserved and what is listed (but also what is erased and denied for listing) is therefore a very important issue. Especially in Greece, which is seen as the foundation of European civilization, this selection is crucial, for it determines what the past, present and future of the Greeks looks like. Since not all history can be turned into heritage, decisions that have been made throughout the years about what histories to preserve and what histories –and therefore memories– to erase and how and by who these decisions and selections have been made will shed light upon the way Greece has been portraying and perceiving itself as a nation.

The effects of social class and indicators of individual economic mobility on African identity were thus examined. 213 Kenyans participated in this questionnaire‐based study for structural equation analysis. The main finding was that socioeconomic status (SES) positively predicts individual economic mobility, which then negatively influences African identity concepts, and that the significance of economic concepts for African identity depends on social class. For example, in the high SES group, materialism and cynicism about Africa's future economic global prospects were found to have a negative effect on commitment to the national economy and African identity. The general implication is that anti‐group economic behaviour in Africa (e.g. corruption, worker exploitation) is attributable to individual mobility, as well as to intra‐national and global economic structures.

Memorials and Location: Local versus National Identity and the Scottish National War Memorial

It analyses the arguments over the design of the memorial and its impact on Edinburgh Castle. The criticisms by Lord Rosebery and others of the design proposed by Robert Lorimer are dealt with in detail. The campaign by the Duke of Atholl to raise money for the memorial is scrutinised and the difficulties in securing donations at a time when there were many simultaneous attempts to raise money for local and institutional memorials are discussed. The article relates this material to the wider literature on war memorials in the period immediately following the First World War. The main theme of the article is to note the way in which the memorial at the Castle came to be accepted as a ‘national’ memorial and how this process relates to the formation and maintenance of Scottish national identity in the 1920s. As highlighted by comparison with the other national memorials, the Scottish National War Memorial ultimately serves to show the unity of the Scottish nation and the ongoing strength of its martial tradition, a means by which Scotland could express a distinctive identity whilst remaining securely within the United Kingdom.
By Scottish hands, with Scottish money, on Scottish soil: The Scottish National War Memorial and National Identity
Journal of British Studies 49 (January 2010): 73–96
This article examines the primary sources relating to the process of organizing the Scottish National War Memorial.... more This article examines the primary sources relating to the process of organizing the Scottish National War Memorial. These papers show the extent to which the Duke of Atholl was the driving force behind the memorial. The process is instructive in some aspects of the relationship between the social elite and self-made industrialists in Scotland. Above all, the erection of the memorial indicates the multi-faceted nature of Scottish identity reflected therein. It shows the ongoing influence of Presbyterianism. It also enriches our appreciation of the imperial dimension of Scottishness, and in particular the way in which Scots around the world considered themselves to be part of an “imagined community”. This article therefore seeks to show how Scotland’s religious, martial and imperial traditions continued to resonate as a means to commemorate this shockingly modern and destructive war.

Abstract: This work aims at analyzing the way English as The Língua Franca approach is understood by the teachers and how this teacher realize his/her national identity. The research takes place at an English school which has its focus on people from the community. The methodology used is the qualitative and the theoretical basis is formed by Hall (1999), Woodward (2005), Moita Lopes (2008), Canagarajah (1999), Phillipson (1992), Jenkins (2006). Through the results we could understand that English as a Lingua Franca approach is not emphasized in the teacher training and thus national identity is being left aside.
KEYWORDS: national identity; teacher training; english as a lingua franca.
