It has much in common with Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) concepts, which rely heavily on the use of XML and interoperable schemas, as well as embracing open web based APIs. One of the key design patterns of the Web 2.0 is software above the level of a single device, whilst one of its key concepts is the data driven nature of services and the core value of specialised databases. In both cases, XML has an essential role to play, both for data and metadata. In this paper, we explore some aspects of developing information systems in the context of the Web 2.0, focusing particularly on device adaptivity, data transformation and interoperability with other services, including the mashup approach. We describe a generic architecture for adaptive web applications and apply this to the development of a prototype mobile learning system.

Assisting Mobile Web Users: Client-Side Injection of Context-Sensitive Cues into Websites

On the other hand, the limitations of mobile devices (e.g., limited screen) and the peculiarities of mobile Web usage (e.g., walking around, driving a car) make it cumbersome to extensively browse a Web page for such useful information. In this paper, we present a client-side approach that aims to assist the mobile user in his browsing session, by correlating the Web page’s content with the mobile user’s context, and subsequently emphasizing and enriching relevant content with so-called context-sensitive cues. To achieve this, we utilize the SCOUT framework for mobile applications to model and access the user’s context, and RDFa annotations present on existing Web pages to identify Web page elements suitable to enrich with context- sensitive cues. The cues themselves are injected using existing adaptation techniques, borrowed from the field of Adaptive Hypermedia.
The next paradigm shift in the mobile ecosystem: mobile social computing and the increasing relevance of users

In this paper, it is argued that mobile social computing will eventually cause an even bigger impact in the mobile ecosystem. We are already at the beginning of the "transference" of a significant part of Internet social computing usage to the mobile domain, where users are no longer passive consumers of content and applications, but co-creators and even innovators of them. However, mobile social computing will go one step further in the contribution to the development of the mobile ecosystem, since it will put the many situations of users' daily activities at the centre stage. To prove this case, this paper gathers available data and evidence on the patterns of mobile social computing usage and discusses user innovation and user empowerment in the framework of the current mobile ecosystem.

Two features typically desired by mobile users are tailored information delivery and context awareness. In this paper, we elaborate a demo application that is built upon the existing SCOUT framework, which supports mobile, context-aware applications. The application illustrates the use of intrinsic mobile features, such as context- and environment-awareness, and combines them with the use of Semantic Web technologies to integrate and tailor knowledge present in distributed data sources.

Purpose – This paper seeks to identify and develop an exploratory framework for conceptualising how teachers might use the affordances of Web 2.0 technologies to support their own professional learning.
Design/methodology/approach – The paper draws on a large corpus of literature and recent research evidence to identify the principal elements and features of professional learning and the underlying affordances of Web 2.0 technologies and applications. It generates an exploratory conceptual framework based on the emerging findings from this review using a socio-cultural theoretical perspective. The framework is explored through three individual illustrations which are drawn from a much larger case study which the author is undertaking within a newly established Academy in the North of England.
Findings – The findings indicate that there is potential value in exploring professional learning with Web 2.0 technologies in the ways described. The framework offers an exploratory instrument to examine how professional learning for teachers could be supported with Web 2.0 technologies in ways that might have significant benefits over traditional methods of continuing professional development (CPD).
Originality/value – The potential value and affordances of Web 2.0 technologies for teachers' professional learning are largely unexplored and under-theorised, and this work seeks to establish a framework for further discussion and empirical exploration.
