Mission Amid Empire: Why Political Formation and Mission are not Mutually Exclusive (Draft Version for Missiology)

Beyond the dilemma of either a Spirit-centered view of mission which frontloads the Trinity into the Spirit’s work in the world, or the the Jesus-centered view of mission which backloads the work of the Trinity onto the historical work of Jesus, we propose the Incarnation-centered view of mission. We argue that only the last offers a trinitarianism capable of resistance to the emerging global empire.
Social and Historical Aspects of the Assimilation of Christianity in Southeast Asia from 1500-1900 with Reference to Thailand and the Philippines

This article attempts to help fill that gap by examining some of the factors affecting the assimilation of Christianity in Southeast Asia by looking at two countries in detail: Thailand and the Philippines. These two countries offer strikingly different assimilation results. Thailand was not colonized when Christianity was introduced while in the Philippines colonization and Christianity were intimately linked. As a result, both Thailand and the Philippines are a study in contrasts.

The underlying assumptions of those who have defined, and subsequently accepted the process of creative destruction as prescriptive for economic growth have been intertwined with a mission theology that continues to affect mission from the West into the twenty-first century. The resulting systems rising in the wake of blind acceptance of creative destruction will not only need to be critiqued (and likely rejected) by local faith communities for their own survival, but will require a model for transformation. Because of complex, multilayered contact between multiple realities in almost every context, this dynamic model for transformation will necessitate moving beyond Hiebert’s model of critical contextualization. As a foundation, I propose that an integrated model of contextual bible study and marginal theology be examined as a local hermeneutical tool for social transformation, leading into mission as creative transformation.

Postmodern Epistemology and the Mission of the Church

A Christian missionary has traditionally been understood as one who stands for and represents truth. Is this a claim that can be defended within the context of postmodern epistemology? According to Derrida, there is an irreducible difference between sign and signified; all historical religions are therefore limited to the realm of the contingent and the deconstructible. Caputo develops this idea further in his understanding of the endlessly translatable trace of the event. One may argue, however, that this understanding of endless translatability reveals a dependence on a traditional concept of reason that ultimately replaces religious authority with the authority of the interpreter. Arguing that a phenomenology of givenness is the relevant strategy against this kind of idolatry, Marion maintains that one has to work from the possibility of revelation as always overflowing its conceptual representation. In a Christian context, this is done through the retelling of the biblical story, particularly as it is celebrated in the liturgy of the Eucharist. The criticism of the idea of a conceptual representation of truth therefore does not imply that truth is not manifest in the work and mission of the Christian church.
