River Dove Project: in search of seasonal transit routes | nine thousand years of hunting
Plugging the gaps between Mesolithic activity and flint assemblages of the high moors, ancient forests, and the Vale... more
Plugging the gaps between Mesolithic activity and flint assemblages of the high moors, ancient forests, and the Vale of Pickering wetlands, ancient lakes and islands. The aim is to map seasonal transit routes and perhaps evidence for different activities through a river valley that cuts through the beautiful escarpments of the tabular hills of the North York Moors.
Under the theme Nine Thousand Years of Hunting, field-walking at Lowna, Gillamoor produced interesting finds and distributions in a river-side location including evidence for activity from the Late (and maybe early) Mesolithic, into the Neolithic—flint scrapers, knapping cores, a tranchet adze, polished whetstone—and definately later by way of a musket gunflint and clay pipe (1730–1770 AD) from the last three hundred years that could well have belonged to the current farmer’s named ancestors! The aim into 2013 is to extend field-walking southwards into the Vale of Pickering.

The age determinations show that the south German Magdalenian began ca. 16,000 BC, i.e. several millennia before the Oldest Dryas. The Magdalenian site Munzingen demonstrates, as does the even earlier, Badegoulian site Wiesbaden-Igstadt, a repeated, perhaps sporadic, occupation of southem Germany during more temperate phases following the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Nevertheless, an intensive and regular resettlement of southem Germany first occurs during the Oldest Dryas. More than ten of the south German Magdalenian sites date to the second half of this stadial phase between 14,000 and 12,700 BC The Magdalenian Occupation continues into the beginning of the Late Glacial Intersta dial Complex, the Bolling interstadial, and apparently persists until the interstadial ends ca. 12,000 BC The transition to the Final Palaeolithic / Azilian in southem Germany is mostly unclear due to the questionable dating of late Magdalenian sites and the small number of dates available for the Final Palaeolithic. From the beginning of the Holocene (9,600 BC) the only industries present are those which also typologically date to the Mesolithic. Their frequency is not regular, instead shows marked chronological oscillations during the course of the Holocene. The reason for this irregularity is still unknown. The south German Mesolithic ends ca. 5,000 BC following a brief period of surrvival alongside the earliest Neolithic.
