‘Islamic Coins from Early Medieval England’

They include specimens from both hoards and single-finds, and are concentrated in eastern and northern England. Most coins were produced in the eighth or ninth centuries, and the volume of finds falls off with coins minted in the first quarter of the tenth century. These features, along with the common cutting-up of these coins and their association with other pieces of hacksilver, suggest that the majority should be associated with economic exchange between England and Scandinavia, where silver dirhams were widely used. However, there is also evidence for pre-viking importation via western Europe of both gold and silver coins; a route which never dried up entirely even in the tenth and eleventh centuries.

Since Aloiss Heiss published Descripción de las monedas hispano-cristianas desde la invasión de los árabes, the continuous advances experienced by the numismatical discipline have allowed that it should reach a major degree of maturity and correct several of the imprecisions gathered in the first great manual of reference. Nevertheless, certain sectors of the numismatical experts linked to the world of the collecting and trade of coins have been obviated great part of the contributions realized by diverse researchers; perpetuating in the bibliography, parallel, some of the mistakes committed by the Belgian investigator. Unfortunately, these are the commercial catalogues where many of the Basque archaeologists identify the coins appeared in the excavations and date the archaeological contexts. The consequences do not stop having certain gravity, since in occasions the historical memory of the deposits is misinterpreted. The analysis on behalf of the statigraphic sequence of the cathedral of Santa Maria of Vitoria-Gasteiz is extremely eloquent in the matter
