***DRAFT ONLY*** This spreadsheet correlates my research identifying approximately 1,000 Crusaders including 8 individuals from Luebeck who may have been among the first Teutonic Knights. This database is limited to the Third Crusade era (1187-1197 AD). Ultimately, I would like this database project to cover all of the Crusades and to have a permanent (university-based) internet home.
A more polished database is currently under construction -- it includes a "wiki" so that any researcher may add or edit information, a standardized ratings scale for source reliability, more in-depth "mouvance" information, and more bibliographical citations. Comments and suggestions for improvement are welcomed!

This paper seeks to shed light on the role of feudo-vassalic relations in Ottonian Germany, approaching the subject... more This paper seeks to shed light on the role of feudo-vassalic relations in Ottonian Germany, approaching the subject from angle of the role which homage played in dispute settlement. Taking as its starting point two descriptions of acts of submission which involved the ritual of homage, it argues that neither can sustain a traditional feudo-vassalic interpretation; it would seem that homage was used in such contexts not because the parties involved were bound by a putative ‘feudal contract’, but rather because it was a flexible rite, which was by no means limited to relations between feudal lords and their enfeoffed vassals. This leads on to a broader reconsideration of feudo-vassalic bonds in the tenth- and early eleventh-century Reich, which argues that though the evidence to hand does not conform well to classic teaching regarding the ‘feudal system’, it nevertheless shows important developments towards something approximating this, which by the second half of the twelfth century comes more fully into view.

Kriegerische Auseinandersetzungen und ihre Darstellung nehmen in der frühmittelalterlichen Herrschaftspraxis und dementsprechend in der historiographischen Überlieferung eine zentrale Funktion ein. Diese allgemeine Beobachtung gilt insbesondere für die Sachsengeschichte Widukinds von Corvey. Widukind stellt in seinem historiographischen Opus ausführlich zahlreiche kriegerische Ereignisse im Kontext des Prozesses der Landnahme (circumcirca loca iure belli obtinent) zur Nationsbildung des Stammes der Sachsen dar. Diese gruben sich in die kollektive Erinnerung der Sachsen ein. Das Referat widmet sich der Wahrnehmung des Krieges bei Widukind und dementsprechend auch bei den Sachsen. Von seinem sächsischen Standpunkt aus spricht er sich deutlich für die Notwendigkeit von Kriegen aus.
Daher geht der Beitrag nicht einfach den kriegerischen Ereignissen und Darstellungen in der Sachsengeschichte nach. Es wird das komplexe Gedankengut Widukinds angesichts der Frage nach einer sächsischen Kultur des Krieges analysiert. Die Untersuchung fokussiert einerseits auf die Begrifflichkeit des Krieges (z.B. bellum externum, bella civilia, bellum universalis, bellum publicum, bellum inter
eminentes viros, pugna, expeditio, andererseits auf dessen Legitimierung (z.B. Sagen und Mythen oder historisch gewachsene Ideen: imperium, libertas, patria, gentes
christianae vs gentes barbarae) sowie auf seine Rechtfertigungsstrategien (z.B. Lebensmittel und- Geldnot, strittige Herrschaftsnachfolgefragen). Eine solche Annäherung ermöglicht es einerseits die Vielfalt der Wahrnehmung von Krieg bzw. Gewalt bei Widukind zu beschreiben, andererseits kann so die Rolle und der Einfluss gentiler, fränkisch-imperialer bzw. römisch-christlicher Traditionen bei deren Bildung erläutert werden. Dies erlaubt es, die Wahrnehmung des Krieges im ideologischen und im pragmatischen Umfeld ihrer Entstehung, sowie der sächsischen Nationsbildung einzuordnen.

Abstract (not a perfect English. Sorry)
In the medieval mysticism, Hildegard von Bingen represents the convergence of different knowledge that circulates in the Germany of 12th century. One of these elements that continues with a lot of holes in academic studies is the Alchemy, which forms a essential part inside the symbolic construction and significative in Scivias and the Liber Divinorum Operum, books with a iconography configuration based on alchemical processes (Nigredo, Albedo and Rubedo), Metalurgic references and iconographic evidence too, which shows a woman like a kind of matrix and life giving, as a “Obstetric symbolism” in Mircea Eliade’s words. The Alchemic allusions inside her books supposes a reflect of the study or knowledge of some references of this ancient discipline, that was introduced by the Arabs and the subsequent disclosure—very discreetly—for Europe, to its final peak in the seventeenth century. The relevance of this new work area involves exploring the convergence of these arts have in Hildegard’s mentality and show for the wide diffusion of alchemy achieved in the twelfth century Europe, as well as conjugation and uptake of this discipline in the Christian doctrine, which would provide at the mystic of Bingen the intellectual explanation of the mysteries of Christianity.

Dentro del misticismo medieval, Hildegard von Bingen representa la convergencia de distintos saberes que circulan por la Alemania del S.XII. Uno de estos elementos que sigue sin ser trabajado es la alquimia, la que forma parte esencial dentro de la construcción simbólica y significativa en Scivias y en el Liber Divinorum Operum, obras que tienen una configuración basada en procesos alquímicos (Nigredo, Albedo y Rubedo), referencias metalúrgicas y también alusiones iconográficas a la mujer como matriz y gestadora de vida, a modo de “simbolismo obstétrico”, en palabras de Mircea Eliade. Las alusiones alquímicas presentes en su obra suponen un reflejo del estudio y/o conocimiento de algunas referencias a esta antigua disciplina, que fue introducida por los árabes y la posterior divulgación—de forma muy discreta—por Europa, hasta su auge definitivo en el siglo S.XVII. La relevancia de esta nueva área de trabajo implica explorar la convergencia que tienen estas artes en la mentalidad de Hildegard y dar cuenta de la gran difusión que la alquimia logra en la Europa del S.XII, además de la conjugación y asimilación de esta disciplina a la doctrina cristiana, que facilitaría a la mística alemana la explicación intelectual de los misterios del cristianismo.

Since the 11th century, there existed contacts between the territory of Ostarrichi and Constantinople, the capital of... more Since the 11th century, there existed contacts between the territory of Ostarrichi and Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire at the Bosporus. These relations were intensified during the period of the Crusades, especially because of the participation of members of the house of Babenberg in these endeavours in the Eastern Mediterranean. Two Babenberg dukes, Henry II Jasomirgott (in 1148) and Leopold VI (in 1203), even married princesses from the imperial houses of Byzantium and became important intermediators between West and East. These events also left their marks in the Greek and Armenian historiography of the time, where we encounter the first references to “Austria”. Besides warfare and diplomacy, also elements of artistic style and stories found their way from the “Orient” to the Danube; yet, one still has to notice the persistent tradition of legends (such as the origin of the popular song “Eia poppeia” in Byzantium) even in scholarly literature. These well-known stories do not have any basis in our sources, which on the contrary allow us to draft a more realistic and at the same time not less fascinating pictures of the relations between Ostarrichi and the Bosporus.

In this study the Straw-bears... more The origins of the Germanic “Straw-bears” have been subject to speculation for years. In this study the Straw-bears will be contextualized along with their European relatives so that their meaning can be better appreciated within a larger framework of European ritual belief and social practice. The cosmogony in question is grounded in the belief that humans descended from bears, a belief that continued into the 20th century among Basque-speakers. The transformative aspects of the Straw-bear performances will be examined in relation to “Good-Luck Visits”, a type of performance aimed at bringing good health and prosperity to the houses visited and in which Straw-bears and their relatives have played a major role.
