In scientific literature, Media Education and Media Activism are usually conceived as two parallel worlds. The article stresses the two phenomena trying to go beyond partial interpretations in order to highlight the convergences and divergences, both theoretically and practically. First authors compare the definitions of Media Education and Media
Activism and, in doing so, identify a first macro-convergence between the two worlds in the promotion of critical sense, the functional exercise of citizenship and participatory democracy. Secondly, the article aims to reflect in a socially situated manner on different meanings that this convergence takes when it passes from conceptualization to the practices of educators and activists. Specifically, different types of education and participation promoted by social actors, in the public sphere and civil society, are discussed. In the final part of the article a reciprocal exchange between Media education and media activism in terms of know-how (eg. methodologies and skills) and that of potential alliances between the protagonists of the two movements is suggested. Finally, a number of issues relevant to open new research pathways that move on the fine line between Media Education and Media Activism are raised.

In this article, we offer our reflections on the opportunities and challenges faced by media literacy educators as we build our global community network, develop a shared theoretical framework that transcends culture and nationality, and return to consider foundational questions about the relationship between power and agency as new visions of digital literacy emerge as educators and creative media professionals explore the new capacities and limitations of the Internet and social media.

Such contentment belies the fact that it has also been a system very slow to change, is notoriously centralised and has only in the last decade instituted significant legislative reform that will enable and facilitate the growth of new curricular areas such as media studies – the topic of this article – an area in which Ireland lags substantially behind our European counterparts.

Introduction
IN FIJI, coup leader Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama and cabinet colleagues sit down with the country’s bankers to put together plans to ‘engage’ with the private sector and revive the flagging national economy. In American Samoa, a wage rise of U$S0.50 cents an hour introduced to match a new minimum federal wage leads to layoffs for more than 200 workers at the Chicken of the Sea (COS) Samoa Packing tuna cannery and a halt to plans for plant expansion.
In Papua New Guinea’s Eastern Highlands, angry rival tribesmen
burn houses to the ground in two Dunantina villages, leaving hundreds of men, women and children homeless. News media report that the destruction of Numuri and Megusa villages is in retaliation over the death of a man during an armed hold-up on the Dunantina Road.
In an editorial, the Samoa Observer comments on the dilemmas
facing migrating Samoans seeking opportunities in a richer country—such as New Zealand—where an ill housewife and mother, Folole Muliaga, died on an oxygen machine barely two hours after electricity was cut off from her Auckland home. This tragedy was the result of an unpaid NZ$168.40 bill. Noted the Observer (2007): To help their children, parents will ‘sail the highest seas, climb the highest mountain, to ensure they have a bright future’.

Emerging themes of analysis that emerge from media industries analysis and can be explored in the industry-facing education of students, include media work and identity, and working conditions, insecurity and uncertainty. This article will consider intersections between higher education focus on employability and media industries analysis and Career Studies perspectives, and related opportunities for exploring career aspirations and examining work practices and contexts in the media and cultural industries.
Crazy radio: the domestication of mental illness over the airwaves

Can radio be a useful tool both for recovering the selves of the patients and for the ‘normal’ people outside the hospitals, helping to communicate less stereotyped images of the mental illness? This article will try to answer these questions, analysing two different case histories, the ones of Radio la Colifata of Buenos Aires – the first radio station to be totally conducted by patients – and of Radio Rete 180 of Mantova, Italy, the last born of this genre. The article is the result of ethnographic research conducted in Buenos Aires and in Mantova through the methods of participant observation of the live radio sessions and in-depth interviews with the patients. The experience I had studying these ‘crazy radio’ stations led me to the belief that community radio practice further enhances the feeling of being at home with ourselves and with others and can effectively work as a tool of social connection and participation, not only in the case of mentally ill patients as it will be shown here, but also in other cases of ‘Otherness’ (i.e. asylum seekers, migrants, prison inmates, etc.).
