These changes imply expansion for the discipline, giving it more visibility and more power to intervene and, consequently, more responsibility. In today's information society, the designer finds himself in the role of the mediator between all the available information and the public(s); he designs communication systems for the network society and defines connectivity schemes and models of interactivity, establishing links and developing interfaces. In order to act inside the field of the possibilities created by information and communication technologies, the new media designer must focus on the most relevant features of digital communications, recognizing the circumstances in which they arise. The aim of this paper is to present some ideas expressed by Bruno Latour, which may be of interest for the creation of a theoretical-philosophical view on the design of digital communications.
Behind the Beat: Technical and Practical Aspects of Instrumental Hip-Hop Composition

From DJ Premier's beat productions in the early '90s to Kanye West's live performance at the 2010 Video Music Awards, the Akai MPC has long been considered standard sampling technology in any hip-hop production studio. Expanding upon the various techniques developed by pioneering hip-hop DJs--including beat-juggling, cutting, and mixing--the MPC introduced a much wider range of possibilities regarding not only the manipulation of individual samples, but their assemblage into a musical composition as well. Furthermore, the expansion of the machine has coincided with the musical development of the hip-hop tradition, as producers have responded and reacted to changing technological trends with increasingly innovative trends in performance practice.
Through analyses of several tracks by DJ Shadow, Madlib, and Flying Lotus, this paper will fill a major gap in hip-hop scholarship by exploring both the technical aspects of the music's construction as well as how these producers have responded and reacted to the changing characteristics of the MPC throughout its development. In exposing diverse technical and musical trends that have received little attention from scholars, this paper hopes to provide a missing link to the way we analyze hip-hop music and culture.

Lwe forme dell'esperienza" (Roma, 2010). The paper proposes a shifting of the object of analysis of media semiotics from media text to media experience – understood as a lived and living, embodied, situated and culturally embedded phenomenon - The paper sketches a model for media experience analysis that takes into account both the analogy with ordinary experience and its particular features. It argues that this approach is able to reach a deeper understanding of the actual practices of media consumption.
