We used the data available from four days of time diaries kept by 1519 households which had details like total work time, sleep time and whether Protestant or not. Our tests show that Weber’s famed “Protestant Ethic” holds true in this case. There is a positive correlation between Protestantism and total work time, which is economically and statistically significant."

The neo-liberal economic transformation that was initiated in post-1980s Turkey has produced a Turkey in the 2000s that has been integrated to the global economy through processes such as the liberalization of the markets, privatization and opening to transnational economic actors and financial instruments. In this manner, starting from the 1990s, the increase, growth and expansion of foreign and multinational corporations in Istanbul has made possible the emergence of new business people, who are more connected to the globe in their daily lives.
These business people constitute a portion of a globally available population that has drawn the attention of academic and non-academic circles throughout the globe from 80’s onwards. In the international sociological literature, this population is regarded as the “transnational elite” of the global era and their members are described as people who are embedded in exclusive transnational social networks, who are globally mobile, who share a global business culture and as people who have exclusive consumption practices.
As for the field research of this thesis, middle and high-ranking business professionals who are employed in foreign and multinational corporations in Istanbul which operate on regional/global levels were interviewed in-depth. In the thesis, these subjects are problematized as political and cultural members of localities and communities that straddle between the local and the global. Within the scope of the interviews, social relations and imaginations of these subjects were discussed through their personal histories and narratives regarding their “selves.” Moreover, their personal opinions regarding contemporary socio-political issues at different geographical levels were discussed.
The aim of the thesis is to contextualize these subjects as national members of the secular Turkish elite and as the transnational members of the transnational professional elite. In this regard, it was discussed whether transnational exposure and experience contribute to the cultivation of cosmopolitan dispositions in regards to the public sphere. It has been observed that the use of socio-political typologies such as “white Turks,” “neo-Kemalists,” “Yuppies” that emphasize socio-political elitism/ indifference/hostility – although may proficiently describe many Turkish elite positions - oversees pluralist and egalitarian tendencies that can be cultivated within elite circles due to translocal interaction and exposure.
Enchantment after Entzauberung

First by examining the etymologies of the key terms in these phrases (‘Entzauberung’ and ‘disenchantment’), then by offering some speculations concerning the provenance of Weber’s phrase (in Schiller, or elsewhere) and finally by engaging the strikingly few employments of the term ‘Entzauberung’ in Weber’s major works, it is concluded that talk about ‘enchanting’ the world (in ways local, provisional and ontologically ‘weak’) ought to be encouraged, while talk about ‘re-enchanting’ the world (in ways ontologically ‘stronger’ and more permanent) ought to be proscribed. We can and must have ‘enchantment’ after Entzauberung, then, but never, except at our peril, ‘re-enchantment’. [17 pages]

Politics develops itself by increasing the efficiency of the means without producing rational political goals. The problem with the social order lies in the contradiction between the needs of the legitimacy, from the point of view of the governed, and the formal structure of the legality. There is not any external criterion to make political decisions except the particular point of view of the government itself. Thus there remains in the modern world a lack of sense that threatens politics.

“Sua sponte facere”: The Problem of Legitimacy of the Unauthorized Contiones in Rome under the Republic

Over a long period of time the issue had not been systematically examined by scholars, until F. Pina Polo published a monograph about contiones in 1988. However he does not believe that the contio, not summoned by a magistrate, was a political institution. The main argument for such view is that unsanctioned contiones were regarded in Roman public law as illegitimate. In this paper it is proved that this type of contiones was held in accordance with customs and laws, as may be deduced not only from particular accounts of narrative sources, but also from legal sources. Unsanctioned contio could be dismissed (if it could) only by appealing to it, which implied its being recognized as sanctioned. The fact that the XII Tables forbid only night-time unsanctioned gatherings (coetus nocturni) means that other such gatherings were not illegal. The sources do not show any other restrictions concerning unsanctioned (not initiated by magistrates) gatherings till 44 B.C. Though assemblies in question were gradually restricted by the law, the process became intense only in the late Republican period; under the Empire unsanctioned contiones were completely forbidden. It is concluded that in the Republican time unsanctioned contiones functioned as established, important and recognized social and political institution as well as official contiones summoned and headed by a magistrate. Unauthorized contiones ensured a legal dialogue between the elite and the masses and helped to develop the principle of representation in the system of Roman public law.
