A chronic illness may present a significant amount of stress for both the patient and partner. In this paper, we discuss the application of an empirically supported couples’ therapy approach, Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT) to address relationship distress and individual functioning in the context of chronic illness. In two case examples, we show how couples can learn to enrich the emotional quality of their relationship, express their inner most feelings of fear, sadness, and loneliness to each other to expand their emotional experiences, and meet each others’ needs for safety, comfort, and security despite the limitations and challenges presented by chronic illnesses.

Interpersonal and systems theorists maintain that human behavior is not adequately accounted for solely by the workings of the personality of the individual. They have argued that forces beyond the personality and outside the control of the individual either contribute to, or more or less exclusively direct, behavior. More specifically, interpersonal and systems theorists contend that behavior is controlled, at least in large part, by the social environment in the form of interpersonal influences and social systems.

Whereas PCT focuses on positive unconditional regard, Adlerian therapy is more solution-oriented. PCT does incorporate the goal-task-method framework, but this is subsumed under the therapist’s regard for the client. For an Adlerian, it is the other way around.

Indeed, two of the most common complaints about Freudian psychoanalysis are that it is time-consuming and expensive (Tridon, 1921). On the other hand, CBT tends to “ignore the effects of an individual’s history in favor of a shallow analysis of the here and now” (Leader, 2008, para. 28) and thus neglect the patient’s long-term needs in favor of short-term improvement in the quality of life. Darnell’s case warrants further investigation by Freudian and CBT therapists who, in pursuit of a better quality of life for Darnell, will employ techniques peculiar to each school of thought.

The client may well be unaware of the impact of these superordinate goals, but a good therapist will reflect back to the client the causes and antecedents of those goals. This will in turn give the client a chance to reevaluate his or her core beliefs without pushing a particular agenda, other than a positive therapeutic outcome.

Too much self-esteem is bad, too little is worse, and narcissism is a bête noire. No school-based activity, apart from after-school care for the children of single parents, can be guaranteed to give children the start they need in life. Only good parenting can do that.

Also used as a counselor training and examination manual, this book gives away the secrets of effective counselors and therapists. The practical skills and concepts distilled in the present form, are the contributions of countless colleagues and clients who over the years have challenged the creative energies of the author. Effective Counseling Skills is designed to achieve the primary purpose of making counseling skills public knowledge in the belief that the health of society is improved when counseling is known to the most people. The style of the manual is conversational with numerous examples of the wording of therapeutic statements.
Major topic areas include an explanation of the client's personal history, suicide prevention, how to begin and deepen the counseling process, helping the client learn healthy ways of relating, moving the client from childhood to maturity, skills for healing grief, and working with couples facing issues of conflict, infidelity, addiction, and other common problems. Practical ways to build and manage a counseling practice are presented. A detailed index and table of contents make the volume easy to use as a guide for both the practitioner as well as people seeking help.
