Thus, almost simultaneously with the establishment of the European institution, a British company obtained a concession from the Ottoman government, which allowed it to build a railway along the Dobrudscha isthmus. The sense of competition put pressure upon the ECD engineer-in-chief, Charles Augustus Hartley, compelling him to work with much expedition; in the same time, owing to the limited resources available, the railway was used as a pretext for abandoning the more resistant and durable, but also more expensive improvements necessary for rendering navigable the St. George branch of the Danube. Thus, the building of a not very profitable enterprise, the Cernavodă – Constanţa railway, resulted in permanent changes in the geography and economics of the Danube Mouths. Besides abandoning the more advantageous works from St. George in favour of the cheaper and easier adjustments from Sulina, the railway scheme of the British capitalists stimulated the commercial houses from Brăila and Galaţi, which, on the one hand, asked the ECD officials for improvements and modern harbour facilities, and, on the other, realised the necessity to consolidate their enterprises. The first phase in the competition between Rail and River was won by the latter, but the victory was gained by means of a debatable solution, which, on a medium and long run, proved fallacious from a technical and economic point of view.

Among these entrepreneurs, Ionian Greeks benefited after 1815 of British protection, an advantage that facilitated their role of mediators of the great trade between the East and the Western markets. Based on unpublished information in the correspondence of the British Vice-Consul in Galatz, found in British archives, this study emphasizes the role of the British subjects from Galati and Braila in the economic development of the Romanian principalities by mid-19th century.

We analyzed 159 lamps discovered in the archaeological area of Noviodunum fortress and we divided them into two big groups, five categories and 21 types. The production of lighting objects emerged and diversified in Noviodunum and its surroundings in the 2nd century A.D. and was stimulated by the presence of military units and the transit trade on the Danube, which served as a genuine “channel” of Roman civilization. Several beautiful lamps dated to the same period were also found in the tumular necropolis near Noviodunum. Most lamps from Noviodunum date to the Early Roman Period (132 lamps), that is an average of 84%, which we consider a sign of economic fervour in the context of rapid Romanization and urbanization that turned Noviodunum into a flourishing municipium by the end of the 2nd century A.D. The remaining 27 lamps (22 of them were made in Noviodunum) date to the Roman-Byzantine Period indicating the growth of local production. The small number of imported lamps reflects the specific economic situation of the Danubian-Pontic area due to limiting trade only with the Eastern Roman Empire. The local lamp production didn’t diversify, but increased, mainly due to the army’s requirements, and second due to the daily necessities that determined part of the rural farms in the area in the 4th century A.D. to redirect their economy to various crafts, including pottery production for the local market.

The inhumation tomb has a rich inventory made of four black glass bracelets, six bronze bracelets, five of which have rolled up ends, and another bracelet made of two twisted bronze wire, a silver ring, glass paste marbles, one rushlight and a bronze coin – a follis from the time of Constantine the Great. Based on the funerary inventory, the tomb was dated to the 4th century A. D. The found objects permit analogies with other items from the Roman-Byzantine necropoleis at Callatis and Beroe

In this paper we study the handmade pottery found in this site. Six pots, similar to Penkovka culture pottery, were found in the last layers of the fortress (late 6th century - early 7th century). The context of the finds in huts indicates that the potters lived inside the fort and were probably members of the garrison.

Nanu-Basarab from the Suceveni–Stoborăni habitat, dated to the Early Iron Age. The analyzed data show that there are two stages of inhabitation in this historical period: one that is represented by the Babadag culture pottery and the other represented by the presence of inhabitation with Basarabi-type decorated pottery. According to the chronological time frame proposed by S. Morintz, the finds from Suceveni–Stoborăni belong to the 2nd phase of Babadag culture, which is dated to the 10th-9th c. BC, followed by a phase that ascribed to the Basarabi phenomenon (8th c.- the beginning of the 7th c. B.C.)
