This article analyses the early days of post-war immigration into the Huddersfield area in relation to around forty Baltic women employed in local hospitals.
In the five years following 1946 these women made their contribution to the post-war reconstruction of England’s services but most of them did not sink roots in Huddersfield soil. This account aims to look more closely at these individuals and examine why their stay was so brief, including the details of their work and the general reception by the host society.

Remembering and forgetting the Great War in New York City

New York City played a unique role in the history of the Great War, contributing to the war effort even before the declaration of war by the United States in 1917. The wartime experiences in the city were accompanied by political and racial tensions as fears of foreign influences undermining the city and the wider nation were ever-present. In a city which had witnessed large-scale immigration over the preceding century, fears of unrest or unpatriotic and un-American behaviour preoccupied both the city and the federal government. Nevertheless, the wartime contribution of the city's foreign-born residents was substantial as large numbers registered for military service. As a means of reaffirming the principles of patriotism and an ‘American’ identity for the city, after the Armistice the official bodies and veterans groups worked to develop a singular expression or ‘spirit’ for the local war memorials. As the schemes for a central war memorial for the city floundered, the local memorials served as a means for residents to adopt and adapt this hegemonic expression of ‘American’ identity and form specific memories of the war for each community.

Faccombe Netherton: Space and place in the Conquest era

Examining the owners and occupiers of the estate as well as the spaces in which they lived, this paper presents a new sequencing of the estate buildings from the excavated evidence (Fairbrother 1990) and draws upon the methodology of spatial analysis as espoused by Hillier and Hanson (1984) to tease out the tacit understandings of social spaces in the era. The paper overall presents not only an in-depth reading of a Wessex estate in constant habitation through the Central Middle Ages but also notes the gendered interpretations of prestige and service as well as marks the changing uses and understandings of space as a part of the construct of an authoritative elite.

How the Cult of Assessment Has Relegated the Teaching of History to the Dustbin: A New Jersey Example

Furthermore, standardized tests, including those used in AP courses, distort the real reason for studying history, namely, to develop criticial thinking skills necessary for an educated electorate in a complex global society. The paper uses the example of frustrated attempts by the author to develop materials to teach US History though state history using multi-media and interactive materials

The received narrative of the discovery of the rich quartz mine at Bendigo in Central Otago has the success of Thomas Logan, Jack Garrett, Brian Hebden and George Goodger of the
Cromwell Company predicated on a fraud committed by Logan.
It is an intriguing tale of a significant theft by a dishonest man in the midst of a famous gold rush to an iconic town and is found in all popular histories of the goldfield.
But is it correct?
Using primary sources and contemporary narratives, the evidence of Logan’s actions during the early days at Bendigo is evaluated and a new conclusion reached.
