During the last years, a number of deficiencies have been detected in the application of thesauri in some retrieval environments. The lack of efficiency is mainly due to some limitations in the thesaurus structure. Recently, a new standard, the ISO/IEC 13250:1999 about topic-maps, has been approved to overcome these restrictions. The standard proposed to include verbs as descriptors and to identify relationships. One advantage of this approach consists in the possibility to employ the verb descriptors as a tool that merges with classical thesaurus could improve them in the indexing tasks.
In this document a bibliographic review is presented. This state of the art is focused in the approach’s advantages and disadvantages. Later, a methodology to develop a thesaurus of verbs is shown. In our method, this verbal thesaurus will be employed to implement the standard about topic-maps automatically.

Trying to shorten the distance between them leads to a new metamodel of relationships that can reflect better the mental habits of modelers when dealing with hierarchical trees.

However, most of these visualizations emphasize only geospatial properties of objects, leaving out other ontological properties. In this paper we propose to extend these visualizations to include non-geospatial properties of documents to support users with elementary and synoptic visual tasks. More specifically, additional suitable representations that can enhance the utility of map-based visualizations are discussed. To demonstrate the utility of the proposed solution, we have developed a prototype map-based visualization system using Google Maps (GM) which demonstrates how additional representations can be beneficial.

The last 40 years have been shaped by disruptive generational transition; as Baby Boomers are replaced by a rebellious Generation X who are now seeing the technology rooted Generation Y enter the workplace with Generation Z to follow in coming years. With the workforce in what feels like a constant state of flux, surely there is a need to ensure that the knowledge and experiences of the generations leaving the labour force is not lost?
This study will show how trans-generational knowledge management can affect the economy and organisational performance and detail knowledge management strategies and tools which can bring benefits to both.

Establishing the value of socially created metadata to image indexing

At the same time, adding new metadata to existing metadata objects may not always add value to those objects. This research examines the potential added value of using user-contributed (“social”) terms from Flickr and the English Wikipedia in image indexing compared with using two expert-created controlled vocabularies—the Thesaurus for Graphic Materials and the Library of Congress Subject Headings. Our experiments confirmed that the social terms did provide added value relative to terms from the controlled vocabularies. The median rating for the usefulness of social terms was significantly higher than the baseline rating but was lower than the ratings for the terms from the Thesaurus for Graphic Materials and the Library of Congress Subject Headings. Furthermore, complementing the controlled vocabulary terms with social terms more than doubled the average coverage of participants’ terms for a photograph. The study also investigated the relationships between user demographics and users’ perceptions of the value of terms, as well as the relationships between user demographics and indexing quality, as measured by the number of terms participants assigned to a photograph. It was found that the participants with more tagging and indexing experience assigned a greater number of tags than did the other participants.
