Gli eventi e le conseguenze di quell’anno memorabile sono al centro di questa breve ma densa sintesi/riflessione di Adriano Prosperi, divisa in tre parti, di cui la prima è significativamente intitolata “Alle origini dell’antisemitismo” ...

Efforts to resist the oppression of people with disabilities by deemphasizing literal acts of healing tend to highlight Jesus's structural critique against unjust institutions, often represented in the Gospels by the Jewish leaders. Yet that message of structural critique and social transformation can easily lead to anti-Jewish readings of the Gospel narratives. The authors model a method of interrogating a previously published sermon, alongside the practice of situating people with disabilities at "the speaking center" of Gospel narratives and exegesis. The article concludes with five homeletic tools that Christian feminist preachers might employ to better undermine both ableism and anti-Judaism

Contrary to the common opinion about the absence of pejorative shade in Old Russian Židove “Jews” (as said by A.A. Gatcuk, N.A. Pereferkovich, I.Z. Berlin, V.V. Vinogradov, H. Birnbaum, A.A. Pichhadze, A. Kulik) in the anti-Judaic exegetic tractate Explanatory Paleya (according to Kolomna copy, 1406) we can observe semantic and stylistic differentiation of words Židove, Iyuděi “Jews”, Yevrěi “Hebrews”, Izdrail’ “Israel”, synove (l’udiye) Izdrail’evi “children (men) of Israel”, Izdrail’ty “Israelites”. Thus almost 70% of Židovinъ “a Jew” is used in the position of rhetorical address and the addressee is slurred over with various pejorative epithets, whereas only in 28% of contexts this word means “the Bible people as the main subject and object of Bible narrative”. The word Yevrěi means inversely just “the Bible people” in more than 80% of contexts, however the Jews contemporary of the Paleya’s author are practically not named such a way. The word Iyuděi actualizes not the ethnic, but the confessional seme, so the Iyuděi are “enemies of Christians” and “personal antagonists of Christ” in the Paleya and other Old Russian anti-Judaic texts.
In addition to the Paleya review the article concerns the Židove — Yevrěi — Iyuděi synonymic row in the discourse of The Prophecy of Solomon (13th or 14th–15th c.), Slavic John Chrysostom’s Sermon Against the Jews (in the Margaritai, 15th c.).

How did merchants build stable commercial relations with strangers, that is, with traders from other ethnic groups, who spoke different languages, and professed different religions? How did they trust each other and monitor their agents’ honesty in spite of the long distance that separated them? A common historiographic explanation points to the supposed strong ethnic cohesion of trading diasporas in order to explain their success in the global economy of the early modern period. In her recent book, Francesca Trivellato challenges this essentialist view. Through the study of the business letters of Ergas & Silvera, a general partnership based in the Tuscan port of Livorno in the first half of the eighteenth century, the author shows the heterogeneity of its trading networks: the Sephardim from Livorno could cooperate with coreligionists as well as with Catholics in Europe and Hindus in Goa, according to the incentives offered by various potential partners. This cooperation, however, did not lead to the dissolution of existing prejudices between the different groups. The book convincingly encourages scholars to compare trading diasporas and displays a successful example of a connected “global history on a small scale”.

Insiders and outsiders: Jews, Christians and the scribe of Codex Bezae

On the one side, there are those who accentuate its anti-Jewish tendency (Epp, Ehrman); on the other side, there are those who highlight its Jewish tendencies (Rius-Camps, Read-Heimerdinger). Building on our hypothesis of a Christian Jewish identity of the scribe (see our article in NTS, forthcoming), the present research seeks to offer a solution for this tension. This will be achieved by the use of social identity approach, more specifically through the theory of self-categorization.
