This is true both with his films and with his stage productions. "Adamo" (1945) and "Rocco and His Brothers" (1960) offer two examples out of many.

By reading and translating Luigi Pirandello’s letters to Marta Abba, we get to know the Italian writer’s life from... more By reading and translating Luigi Pirandello’s letters to Marta Abba, we get to know the Italian writer’s life from 1926 to 1936, not only in its external events, but also in author’s deep existential drama, as they give insight into the issues that concerned him in the most intimate way: his loving suffering and the destiny of the theatre in Italy. The elements which help the translating work of these letters are the way they specify its relationship with the macrotext and with the history of the reception of author’s work in the target culture. Two particular cases of that translating work are presented here.
