The few Armorican series presented here show that these tools can provide valuable information about craft industry and the exploitation of the environment. The first three examples describe the situation on the continent, where many varied stone tools are found. Beside older-type tools, a whole range of new stone implements is produced. They are used in metallurgical, textile and pottery productions. A different pattern of management appears in the coastal environment, as, for example, in the case of island sites: stone is more extensively used on such sites, and the stone tools contribute as much to the exploitation of marine resources as craft productions. This overview is supplemented by the analysis of a particular type of tool, linked to salt production by evaporation of sea water. Numerous stone tools are still used during the Iron Age, and this practice is not an archaism. The continuing use of this material is explained for technical and practical reasons, and the repertoire of stone tools is well adapted to the new needs of an economy becoming more and more complex.

Several points are discussed, ranging from raw material supply and exploitation to the evolution of milling techniques and their economic consequences. Since the Early Neolithic, the development of reciprocal querns in built structures of Danubian tradition reflects the importance of cereal consumption at the domestic level. On Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age sites, “basin” querns represent a real evolution of grinding techniques and probably also the food practices. Because of their high level of fragmentation, querns from the Bronze Age remain poorly known in Brittany. During La Tène, the rapid spread of rotary querns leads us discuss the existence of a new organisation and control of raw material resources, new modes of production on major sites (flour milling) and new ways of distribution of querns -and probably other valued goods- throughout western Europe.

Using linear projections, the distribution of these imports is quantified and compared to the other provenances – Nordic, Atlantic and Danubian domains, Iberian Peninsula, Eastern Hallstatt zone. Its evolution during the Early Iron Age, from the transition with Bronze Age to the princely sites network, is also discussed.

Situated in the Alpine Foreland, Lake Steisslingen provides sediments covering the last 16,000 sidereal years. The exceptional
value as an environmental archive is due to large laminated sections, found in several long cores. Counting of organic varves allowed
the establishment of a detailed varve-based age model. A high-resolution pollen analysis for the period 5457 BC to 813 AD was
carried out and compared with an archaeological mapping of a 5km radius around Lake Steisslingen. The combined interpretation
of the palynological and archaeological evidence facilitates a reconstruction of the settlement history and the evolution of the
landscape over the last eight millenia. Several important aspects of vegetational and settlement history are illuminated: The
mathematical ordination method of correspondence analysis is used to extract the main dimension of explanation from the pollen
data. A single curve is generated and thought to reflect human impact. The validity of this assumed proxy is tested against the
vegetational and archaeological evidence of the micro-scale area since Neolithic times. From the Steisslingen example, we conclude
that human impact is the most important and, in a mathematical sense, continuous factor in vegetational development of those
landscapes, which are settled since prehistoric times.

It points out the methodological shortcomings in both field work and interpretation of the finds. It then turns to several issues related to the finds: the identity of the inhabitants, their territorial affiliation and the possibility of identifying Khirbet Qeiyafa with sites mentioned in the Bible and in the Shoshenq I list.
