Intertextuality and the Pericanonicity of the Didache: The Dependence and Commentary of Didache 1:2-6 on the Canonical Gospels of Matthew and Luke

I will argue that Didache, at least this section of it, shows dependency on both Matthew and Luke. This dependency begins to explain two things: why Didache fails to make the cut of official canon and why it still remains close to the canon, in a group of pericanonical texts which are not canon but are still good to read. The later date of Didache, and its derivative nature, exclude it from the canon on the grounds of apostolicity. At the same time, this same dependence on, harmony with, and commentary on Matthew and Luke ensures that Didache will remain “good to read.”

Die ‚grandiose Relativität‘ – Zur Deutung des Todes der Charite (Apul. met. 8,1-14)

Following the research on the tale about Charite‘s death in Apul. met. 8,1-14, one is able to find many and very different interpretations of its message.
In this paper I made use of a rather constructivist approach in interpreting Apuleius and developed the thesis that the author deliberately confuses his audience and thoroughly refuses to present a message of his tale. Apuleius does so by:
- purposefully loosing the tale‘s connection the rest of the novel,
- s y s t e m a t i c a l l y establishing discordant or even contradicting pictures of his figures in intra-, extra-, and intertextual ways,
- and also by wittingly undermining the sub-narrator‘s authority.
So, if one is allowed to modify a statement of Fuhrmann‘s about Tacitus, one can allude to the story of Charite‘s death as a tale of ‚profuse relativity‘.

This paper proposes an analysis of Tom Stoppard’s play "Travesties" in light of the concept of estrangement, developed by the Russian literary scholar Viktor Shklovsky. The first section of the essay will describe the three dominant elements in Travesties: foreign/estranged language, intertextuality, and theatricality. The second section will consider the juxtaposition of historical and fictional events as a key factor for estrangement, and it will also examine the presence of a character-narrator on stage, and the relation this characters bears to the estranging factors already mentioned.
Key words: Tom Stoppard; Travesties; Viktor Shklovsky; James Joyce; Oscar Wilde; estrangement; intertextuality; theatricality.

Both the Homeric formulas and the expressions used only once in the Iliad and Odyssey are identified in each of the poet's three works. The analysis ends with a synthesis, where the following conclusions are proposed: 1) Xenophanes makes an appreciable use of the Homeric diction; 2) this use varies according to the work; 3) Xenophanes does not merely repeat expressions taken from Homer, but goes so far as to adapt and refashion them according to his goals; 4) we can thus consider Xenophanes to move within the poetic tradition represented by Homer, not withstanding his hostile attitude towards this author.
