The EU and the Recycling of Colonialism: Formation of Europeans through intercultural dialogue

More precisely, the aim is to analyze who is being constructed as counterparts of the intercultural dialogue through the discourse produced by the EU in policies on education, culture and intercultural dialogue. Within the Union, Europeans are portrayed as having an a priori historical existence, while the ones excluded from this notion are evoked to demonstrate its difference in comparison to the European one. The results show that subjects not considered as Europeans serve as markers of the multicultural present of the space. Thus, intercultural dialogue seems to consolidate differences between European and Other – the ‘We’ and ‘Them’ in the dialogue – rather than, as in line with its purpose, bringing subjects together.

Near East is the geographical region covered by the Patriarchate of Antioch.... more
Near East is the geographical region covered by the Patriarchate of Antioch. Trying to foresee the future in this region is not an easy exercise considering how much the political scene has been changing in this region starting with the first decades of the 20th Century. This region has known, since the 7th Century the co-existence of the three Abrahamic religions while its political profile was and is forever changing. Churches of the region had to live under different regimes and the political links that some confessions had with the rulers influenced a lot the inter-religious dialogue and the peaceful co-existence of the believers.
Trying to focus on the experience of Orthodoxy in the Near East is an important exercise because the Orthodox Church existed in the region since the 1st Century and has had a continuous presence since then. Focusing on the educational aspect of this presence is a means to underline how this Church tried, over centuries, to live its mission in the world, and to see how we can build on this experience to prepare for the future in a positive, open, and dynamic way. After a quick overview of the specificity of Orthodoxy in this region, and of the specific and broad understanding of the term education, this presentation will focus on the link between these two folders in preparing for the future, by answering this main question: How will Orthodoxy continue to witness in the Near East, bringing to the region peace, hope, and a message of love?
This presentation will answer these questions by stressing the fact that the future of Orthodoxy in the Near East, while the 21st century seems to be a turning point for the whole region, is not only a social presence of a confessional group in midst of other groups. It is the witness for specificity, a service to be rendered to all communities, a way to preserve God’s will.
IS TURKANA CATTLE RAIDING A PART OF TURKANA ETHNICITY? AN ANTI ANTI-ESSENTIALIST VIEW OF BOTH INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL FACTORS FOR NGINGOROKO
DRAFT ONLY

This paper examines Turkana cattle raiding through ethno-history and current anthropological studies in an attempt to make connections between the practice of cattle raiding and Turkana ethnicity. Often, the root causes of cattle raiding are identified by peace-seeking NGOs as directly related to 1) the scarcity of resources in the harsh arid environment and the ensuing poverty, and 2) the availability of automatic weapons (AK-47s). I argue that these external factors alone are insufficient in describing the root causes of Turkana cattle raiding. Internal ethno-religio factors, including the structure of a moral economy, the belief in divine ethnic election, and the role of traditional religious diviners/priests (emuron) must also be examined as root causes for anyone seeking solutions to the problems of cattle raiding in the Northern Rift Valley.

Modul I: Dienstag, 07. Juni 2011, 18.30 Uhr bis 21.00 Uhr
Modul II: Dienstag, 14. Juni 2011, 18.30 Uhr bis 21.00 Uhr

RIKK – Regionale Interkulturelle Kompetenz

Neo-liberal Witches, Christian Diviners, and Neo-colonial Big Men: Globalized African Interpretations of Missionary Identity
presented at the Evangelical Missiological Society Regional Meeting, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Feb 26, 2011. (Publication forthcoming as a book chapter in 2012.)

The particular categories of identity this paper engages with include witch, diviner and Big Man. Since some scholars have convincingly argued that Western categorization of African religious understandings are largely contrivances (p’Bitek 1970, Horton 1993, Shaw 1990), these categories are more fruitfully understood as continually being reinterpreted through increased global-local interactions that involve economic, religious and political factors. Recognizing this contestation requires fluid and complex understandings of these categories, leading me to specify African globalized interpretations of missionaries as “neo-liberal” witches, “Christian” diviners and “neo-colonial” Big Men, because of missionary connections to globalized wealth-accumulating market systems, priestly intercessory religious functions, and power status in communities gained through economic favors. This is not an attempt to define the categories of witch, diviner and Big Man, but to begin discussions about the ways that these studied categories are often the very same categories through which missionaries are interpreted.
