We propose in this research that the agentification problem for applications in industrial process control can be systematically resolved by adopting a holonic reference architecture, such as PROSA, and building the application at two distict levels, the holonic (object) level and the properly agent level. The object (holonic) level can be regarded as a level where control (of production processes) is totally centralized, as appropriate for massproduction situations, whereas the agent (distributed) level is switched on and assumes control of production processes when disturbances render central control impractical. In this paper we present the rationale behind the
PROSAGENT Framework that we have developed, which integrates the holonic and the multi-agent system based approaches for developing intelligent manufacturing system applications.
