This usability pilot study is part of a larger e-text pilot project at Ball State University, the goal of which is to draw conclusions about two e-text platforms, Courseload and the Nook Study. The study includes four classes and a total sample population of 210 students. Study methodology included a literature search, platform evaluation, preliminary student survey, in-person usability testing, final student survey, and professor interviews. Where applicable, statistical tools for determining significance were used.
The most valuable conclusions were drawn about e-text usage in general, and some important observations were made about each of the two platforms. Generally, the Nook Study appeared to be the more usable platform, but suffered from significant technological failings. In addition to navigation (especially for use in math classes) and zoom complaints, , the Courseload platform suffered especially from the broader failing of e-text platforms: that they merely allow computer access to textbooks designed for print. Broad results included a desire for better zoom, screen capture/copy/paste, and interactive features that take advantage of the electronic format. We conclude that the e-text remains immature in terms of the course textbook. Professors tended to strongly dislike the platforms. Students tended to have definite opinions for or against, but no clear consensus. Interestingly, student access to computers and Internet access still posed significant barriers for a minority of students, which would be critical for institutions to address if they adopt e-texts on a wide basis.

The emergence of new radical technologies demands innovative answers of an established industry. With reference to the threat of obsolescence, research in the Home Entertainment Industry’s innovation strategies presents a paradigm, which suggests that due to path-dependence, this particular industry suffers from a lock-in effect in its core technology, which is enhanced by deep roots in monocultures of product, infra-structure and client base. Long-term research argues that these three causes effect a holistic lock-in, globally expressed in declining demand. Industrial experts expect the obsolescence of the manufacturing part of this industry in the near future. The conclusion is that the path-dependent innovations made are too marginal for survival on radically changing markets.

Metamorphosis of The Arab World:
Political Geography and Alternative Maps
Editors: Barış Çoban, Barış Erdoğan
The so-called "Arab Spring", recent social movements in the Arab world, which can also be described as the "return of the oppressed", have attracted international attention on the Middle East and Arab world. The Middle East, North Africa and Turkey have been profoundly affected by this political and social metamorphosis. The objective of this project is to discuss “metamorphosis of the Arab world” in the context of international relations, politics, sociology, economics and communications and so on by the contribution of several academicians, researchers, politicians and journalists.
The geography of the Arab world is in a process of metamorphosis and consequently traditional structure of the Arab world, its power structure, power relations, politics and social relations have been fluctuated by the hand of the global super power(s). In fact, “All that is solid melts into air", this expression summarizes clearly what is happening in the Middle East and North Africa. The possible outcomes and/or result of this ongoing process are vague, and it needs to be discussed with its all aspects.
As a result, our focus is on “metamorphosis” of the Middle East and the Arab world, since it simultaneously means “metamorphosis” of the world. This book project aims to address and discuss transformation and subsequent reformation of societies and changes in the political geographies and mental maps of the Middle East, North Africa and Turkey from past to present with a multi-voice and multi-layer approach.

Laptops in The Livingroom: Mobile Technologies and the Divide Between Work and Private Time Among Interactive Agency Workers
by Sam Ladner

These workers are frequent users of both personal and company-issued mobile technology. This article investigates the strategies workers use to restrict workplace access during their private time. Relying on the social construction of technology as a point of departure, this article investigates the impact of mobile technologies, as well as the organizational context in which they are used. Using a mixed-method approach, this article demonstrates that the use of mobile technologies does indeed render the home/work division more permeable, but it is not their use alone that determines this effect. Rather, it is the underlying social relations of workplaces that affect how individuals negotiate the use of these technologies in non-work time and space.

The article responds to the apposite questions: What new key initiatives could be adopted by a newly- reformed, tertiary-sector, dual-mode school of business, innovation, and enterprise to "jazz up" its practical application of modern information and communication technologies, and other innovations in teaching and learning? ... How should the new initiatives be deployed in order to embrace not only the school's current core teaching activities, but also the school’s need to create and introduce risk- managed learning environments and learning adventures that give credence to the school’s aspiration to deliver "real world" and research-informed learning? The school is preparing for amalgamation and strategic turnaround under a newly-appointed head of school. Accordingly, how can practical changes be implemented quickly, reliably, and cost-effectively? How best can existing resources, distinctive strengths, and existing staff competencies be leveraged to achieve productive results? What are the key barriers to success that must be overcome?

Although protest remains “on the streets,” it has also moved into the digital realm. This essay builds on the work of Franklyn Haiman by considering the ethical and rhetorical dimensions of hacktivism (politically motivated computer hacking). After briefly tracing the historical development of hacktivism, I discuss several recent politically motivated website defacements and denial of service attacks, concluding that Haiman’s argument that the rhetoric of the streets should be held to different rhetorical and ethical standards still holds true in the online world.
Teachers’ Perceptions of Integrating Information and Communication Technologies Into Literacy Instruction: A National Survey in the United States
Co-authored with David Reinking
This research explores literacy teachers’ perceptions of integrating information communication technologies (ICTs)
into literacy instruction. To this end, a national survey of 1,441 literacy teachers in the United States was conducted.
The survey provided data concerning the types and levels of reported availability and use of ICTs, beliefs about the
importance of integrating ICTs into literacy instruction, and perceived obstacles to doing so. The analysis of data
included descriptive statistics, an exploratory factor analysis, and a path analysis used to test a model hypothesizing a
relation between teachers’ perceived importance of technology and reported levels of integration. Results revealed
relatively low levels of curricular integration, consistent perceptions about obstacles to integration, and technological
rather than curricular definitions of ICTs and of integration. The path analysis suggested several characteristics and
influences associated with higher levels of integration and use. The findings advance understanding of the extent to
which ICTs are being integrated into literacy instruction and what factors should be considered toward profitably
increasing integration consistent with expanding definitions of literacy.
INTERNET USE AND ONLINE LITERACY AMONG MIDDLE GRADE STUDENTS AT RISK OF DROPPING OUT OF SCHOOL
Co-authored with Laurie Henry. Published in Middle Grades Research Journal.
This research provides an analysis of Internet use and online literacy skill among seventh-grade students who
were identified as having a high risk for school dropout. Participants (n = 1,025) included students from 12
middle schools in 9 school districts. Six of the schools were located in rural and urban districts in the Northeast
United States (n = 718), and 6 schools were located in rural areas and smaller cities in the Southeast
United States (n = 307). The researchers developed a survey and assessment instrument to determine frequency
of Internet use both inside and outside school as well as questions that assessed students’ ability to
read and communicate in online contexts. Results indicated that the students in this study use the Internet outside
school more frequently and more diversely than inside school. Additionally, students in this study
showed limited skills pertaining to the use of the Internet for various literacy-based activities, including (a)
searching for and locating information efficiently, (b) reading search engine results and website texts, (c) evaluating
the currency, accuracy, and reliability of information, and (d) electronically communicating information
to others.

In this study, we build and test a stochastic, agent-based model of information diffusion, called dFusion. The model incorporates diffusion research and social network analysis
into a framework that is consistent with the findings of digital divide and knowledge gap research. Using three separate real-world datasets, our model demonstrates clear causal
relationships between social structure, communication network structure, and the degree of "information equality" (relatively equivalent speed of access to salient information) within a given social network. By focusing on differential, rather than
absolute, speed of access to information, we hope to create an evaluative framework for information technology investment that accurately and comprehensively predicts the
effects of such interventions on social equality.
Technological pedagogical content knowledge – a review of the literature

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) has been introduced as a conceptual framework for the knowledge... more Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) has been introduced as a conceptual framework for the knowledge base teachers need to effectively teach with technology. The framework stems from the notion that technology integration in a specific educational context benefits from a careful alignment of content, pedagogy and the potential of technology, and that teachers who want to integrate technology in their teaching practice therefore need to be com- petent in all three domains. This study is a systematic literature review about TPACK of 55 peer-reviewed journal articles (and one book chapter), published between 2005 and 2011. The purpose of the review was to investigate the theoretical basis and the practical use of TPACK. Findings showed different understandings of TPACK and of technological knowledge. Impli- cations of these different views impacted the way TPACK was measured. Notions about TPACK in subject domains were hardly found in the studies selected for this review. Teacher knowledge (TPACK) and beliefs about pedagogy and technology are intertwined. Both deter- mine whether a teacher decides to teach with technology. Active involvement in (re)design and enactment of technology-enhanced lessons was found as a promising strategy for the develop- ment of TPACK in (student-)teachers. Future directions for research are discussed.

However, a real breakthrough to the mass market has not been fully achieved yet, due to a number of potential reasons, inter alia, institutional circumstances, drawbacks in technology and missing understanding of the real values inherent in location based services. Preliminary literature still indicates a lack of research in terms of understanding consumers’ perceptions towards location based services from a consumer-centric rather than a technology-focused perspective. Therefore, the aim of this particular study is to investigate the actual consumer perceived value of touristic location based services. An exploratory sequential strategy is applied to develop and test a six-dimensional measurement scale. The findings suggest the extension of the original model by two new value dimensions, namely informational and convenience value. Further need for research and managerial implications are provided.

Abstract: After having done a research on the use of a personal computer by nurses working in ambulatory care, we show, by using the notion of territory (Goffman), a few transformations in the way healthcare services are given. Especially, we show that the use of a personal computer by nurse in ambulatory care has a specific impact on their work environment, as well as their relation with patients.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) discusses the benefits of using ICT in the Primary Healthcare setting in terms of better access to information, improved communication between colleagues, facilitating continuing professional development and providing learning tools for healthcare professionals, patients and the community as a whole. This review of the literature describes the role of information and communication technology (ICT) in the education and professional practice of healthcare workers and goes on to outline the challenges facing the widespread adoption of ICT. The conclusion is that ICT does indeed have a positive role to play in both the education and professional practice of healthcare workers, including physiotherapists, as long as it is implemented as an adjunct to established and proven practice, and not a replacement.
