Electrifying Rural Nevada: Mining and Hydroelectricity in Nevada's Northeastern Frontier (1896-1920)

With the incorporation of a new mining company, the consolidation of existing claims, and the construction of a technologically forward-thinking stamp mill, Tuscarora was primed for resurgence. Like other mining districts in Nevada, the newly formed company needed energy to power its stamp mill, surface and underground lights, ore and man-hoists, and other mining ephemera, but they were faced with the remarkable lack of woody fuel required for steam boilers. To solve this problem, the company undertook a heavily capitalized venture to harness the power of the area’s second-most available resource, water. In a parched and arid landscape, hydroelectric power served the needs of Elko County’s leading gold and cyanide producers between 1899 and 1920. Archaeological survey and historical research has reconstructed the fascinating story of Independence Valley’s hydroelectric plants and power line, its impact on Tuscarora’s third mining boom, and the role homesteaders and ranchers in electrifying Nevada’s Northeastern Frontier.

Post-faction to the volume “Spazi del fare / Območja tradicionalnih dejavnosti” (that is: "Spaces of Making"), catalogue of the exhibition that illustrated the main historical-architectonic buildings built for productive purposes that were considered in the European project "The places of production and technological innovation in the thematic tourism": to conclude the book, this essay sums up the main categories, continuing and widening the analysis developed for the exhibition. The main research questions are then re-discussed, stimulating scholars, administrators and common people to re-appraise, re-use and re-invent this historical heritage, perishable beyond all appearance: because it is urgent to saving those “things” that today must be considered as rarities, possibly making them available for a thematic cultural tourism, as it is already done in other parts of Europe.

We start from the assumption that the fault is identified in the high degree of difficulty in self-financing and financing of new, small and medium firms have access to channels to obtain funds for investment. The findings suggest that the fault lies in not finding a financial structure that fits with national peculiarities and industrial policy, contributing to low competitiveness and technological development of Brazilian industry. However, throughout the 2000s, there is evidence of the construction of a new institutional arrangement through the strengthening of public credit and the cash flows, benefit from the use of financial products and own resources for financing investment projects. In parallel, indicating that large firms solved the financing problem, but the arrangement needs to be improved, be better integrated with industrial policy and reduce the financial repression of other firms.

Abstract:
The amble use of energy has always been an important part of the Finnish way of life - not least because of the climate, industrial structure and long distances. Fire and firewood have held a central position in everyday live. The decisions concerning the use of energy had far-reaching consequences already in the 19th century.

The text below aims to analyse the historical circumstances surrounding the Royal Mint of
Jubia in the period from 1827 to 1835, using municipal documentary sources together with documentation produced by the Monarchy’s central institutions. This perspective enables us to unravel
the relationships between individuals, mercantile groups, the Mint’s workforce and the central
institutions in their conflicts and interdependence and so gain an insight into the reasons for the
closure, which range from structural economic issues to personal and political interests.

Abstract
The International Committee for the History of Technology’s
40th Symposium in Manchester, UK on 22-28 July 2013
ICOHTEC will hold its 40th symposium as part of the 24th International Congress of the History of Science, Technology and Medicine in Manchester late July 2013 (http://www.ichstm2013.com). The general theme of the Congress is “Knowledge at Work” and ICOHTEC encourages proposals for sessions dealing with the history of techno¬logy within this broad framework. While open to all proposals, the programme committee suggests ten sub-themes for the consideration of session organizers and contributors.
We urge contributors to organize a full session of three papers, or multiple related sessions of three papers in each, with a named chair for each session. Individual paper submissions will, of course, be considered and grouped into sessions if deemed appropriate, but full sessions are strongly preferred. The programme committee encourages the organizers of sessions to announce their plans to compile sessions and communicate with potential collaborators through H-NET, Academia.edu and other networks including less formal social media. It is also possible to propose papers unrelated to the general theme. They can be presented in a “Special Topics” session.
Membership in ICOHTEC is not required to participate in the symposium. We especially encourage graduate students to participate in the symposium and submit their proposals. Limited travel grants will be available; see further information at: http://www.icohtec.org/
PROPOSAL SUBMISSIONS
The final deadline for all submissions is 15 March 2012.
Please, submit proposals for papers and sessions via the ICOHTEC online submission system at: http://www.icohtec.org/annual-meeting/cfp-system/2013-manchester/
Should you have any queries on the procedure, please contact Mark Clark, the chair of the programme committee, via email (mark.clark@oit.edu).
We look forward to meeting you in Manchester.
Cordially,
Timo Myllyntaus

This paper presents research in progress that seeks to join up the fabulous wealth of information on the historic global copper industry held in local archives. It is primarily based on a survey that was made of copper company records held by the Richard Burton Archives at Swansea University, as part of an ESRC-funded knowledge exchange project on the Global and Local Worlds of Welsh Copper (2010-11).
...
All these collections are part of our industrial heritage and they provide essential insights into the activities that went on in the buildings and sites we campaign to preserve and interpret. This paper therefore seeks to raise awareness of these business archives and demonstrate their potential for improving our knowledge of historic copper.

The bridge provided a crucial link across the River Tees to the emerging industrial works on the north bank of the river and beyond, and similarly provided access to the industrial, commercial and retail businesses on the Middlesbrough side of the river. However, delays in the project meant approximately fourteen years had elapsed from initial discussions of a crossing to its fruition in the form of the world’s largest vertical-lift bridge.
