This usability pilot study is part of a larger e-text pilot project at Ball State University, the goal of which is to draw conclusions about two e-text platforms, Courseload and the Nook Study. The study includes four classes and a total sample population of 210 students. Study methodology included a literature search, platform evaluation, preliminary student survey, in-person usability testing, final student survey, and professor interviews. Where applicable, statistical tools for determining significance were used.
The most valuable conclusions were drawn about e-text usage in general, and some important observations were made about each of the two platforms. Generally, the Nook Study appeared to be the more usable platform, but suffered from significant technological failings. In addition to navigation (especially for use in math classes) and zoom complaints, , the Courseload platform suffered especially from the broader failing of e-text platforms: that they merely allow computer access to textbooks designed for print. Broad results included a desire for better zoom, screen capture/copy/paste, and interactive features that take advantage of the electronic format. We conclude that the e-text remains immature in terms of the course textbook. Professors tended to strongly dislike the platforms. Students tended to have definite opinions for or against, but no clear consensus. Interestingly, student access to computers and Internet access still posed significant barriers for a minority of students, which would be critical for institutions to address if they adopt e-texts on a wide basis.

Although creativity is regarded as an important employability skill, it is a quality in which tertiary graduates are often lacking. Thus, the development of creative thought should be promoted as an integral part of tertiary education; Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can assist in accomplishing this task. Research suggests that ICT has the potential to encourage and support creative thinking throughout the learning process. This paper investigates the links between the theories of encouraging creative thinking in an educational context, and the practice of incorporating ICT in the implementation of learning strategies. The paper reviews the constraints and challenges associated with the deployment of ICT as a tool for encouraging creative thinking, and concludes with suggestions for effective implementation.

This research reveals ICT uses in Greek preschool education and explores this use of ICT based on van Hiele model for science education. In this study, we use mathematical (Early Numeracy Test - ENT) and natural tests to explore the use of ICT in preschool classroom for teaching basic mathematical and natural science concepts. The ENT is a task orientated test which attends to measure the level of early mathematical
competence developed for Kindergarten. Pupils in the control group received only the traditional science instruction about a variety of topics concerning main natural science phenomena and mathematical concepts. Pupils in the experimental group received only the science instruction based on van Hiele model with the use of ICT for the same natural scientific phenomena and mathematical concepts. Both the experimental and the control groups consisted of classes from the same participating schools. Our research is in progress and the first indicative results show that teaching and learning through ICT is an interactive process for children at preschool level and has a positive effect for science education. We argue that a change is necessary so as an innovative teaching method can be successful, not only concerning materials, but also concerning approaches and beliefs.

Objective To systematically review the literature on the implementation of e-health to identify: (1) barriers and facilitators to e-health implementation, and (2) outstanding gaps in research on the subject.
Methods MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PSYCINFO and the Cochrane Library were searched for reviews published between 1 January 1995 and 17 March 2009. Studies had to be systematic reviews, narrative reviews, qualitative metasyntheses or meta-ethnographies of e-health implementation. Abstracts and papers were double screened and data were extracted on country of origin; e-health domain; publication date; aims and methods; databases searched; inclusion and exclusion criteria and number of papers included. Data were analysed qualitatively using normalization process theory as an explanatory coding framework.
Findings Inclusion criteria were met by 37 papers; 20 had been published between 1995 and 2007 and 17 between 2008 and 2009. Methodological quality was poor: 19 papers did not specify the inclusion and exclusion criteria and 13 did not indicate the precise number of articles screened. The use of normalization process theory as a conceptual framework revealed that relatively little attention was paid to: (1) work directed at making sense of e-health systems, specifying their purposes and benefits, establishing their value to users and planning their implementation; (2) factors promoting or inhibiting engagement and participation; (3) effects on roles and responsibilities; (4) risk management, and (5) ways in which implementation processes might be reconfigured by user-produced knowledge.
Conclusion The published literature focused on organizational issues, neglecting the wider social framework that must be considered when introducing new technologies.

New models of research supervision include different research supervisor and student roles and entail the constitution of online research communities regarding common goals. Even though the potential of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) for shaping the supervision processes is undeniable, literature related to this issue is still scarce. This article presents a case study about the use of ICT to enhance the online research supervision process. ICT was used for content delivery and sharing, and to facilitate the interaction between postgraduate students and a supervisor, as well as between the students. Based on the supervisor's reflections, key positive and negative factors are also systematised.

Although they do not present a special educational need in the common mean- ing, they have very particular learning needs that, if overlooked, may lead to adverse feelings towards school and learning that can result in academic failure. Authors in the field agree that giftedness can and must be developed and providing challenging and facilitative learning environments is the first building block. The PLE, held up by WEB 2.0, for its openness and possibilities it offers to learn autonomously, resorting to exploration, discovery, networking with like-minded peers and experts fits the style and pace of learning of its user and shows to be a tool to fully suite the particular traits of these students. In this chapter a 5 dimension ple is conceptualized that accommodates the cognitive, emotional and education needs of gifted students.

The real and functioning teaching networks created by physics teachers count among the first relevant and concrete examples of such virtual communities. The interviewed physics teachers consider ICT and the use of mailing lists as elements which have inserted themselves naturally alongside other more traditional teaching methods and practices. For them, the lists can thus be likened to a kind of ongoing at distance training course. Furthermore, participating teachers are in the process of rapidly sharing and redistributing information and methods, this contributes to the ongoing training of the community based on practical experience.
