As the American dream evolves, precipitated by declining real estate prices and a renewed interest in city living, many predict that condos will become the predominant form of housing in the 21st century. In this unprecedented study Matthew Gordon Lasner explores the history of co-owned multifamily housing in the United States, from New York City's first co-op, in 1881, to contemporary condo and townhouse complexes coast to coast. Lasner explains the complicated social, economic, and political factors that have increased demand for this way of living, situating the trend within the larger housing market and broad shifts in residential architecture. He contrasts the prevalence and popularity of condos, townhouses, and other privately governed communities with their ambiguous economic, legal, and social standing, as well as their striking absence from urban and architectural history.

In it we attempt to consider Baťa and Zlín as a specific kind of myth which is still alive within our cultural milieu. In the text which follows we will deal with one chapter from the overall story of Zlín: with the forms of worker housing, the original assumptions around its construction and its life in everyday currency (based on in-depth interviews with the residents). With this analytical look at this unique phenomenon we wish to peer under one layer of the Zlín myth.

This phenomenon has been more or less physiological and spontaneous differing from the regional and productive contexts from which it developed, but the phenomena that have supported and promoted it are usually the same at the continental level. Certainly, the increased cost of energy from renewable sources contributed to it and the resulting impoverishment of the end users who must bear the burden, the development of technologies for better and more integrated systems for energy production in the technical elements of buildings, the improvement of performance in energy terms of materials and building product components. In this context, in recent years several addressing measures used both on a continental and national scale, which led to the development of a body of law, articulated on local level in a very widespread way, causing a drastic review of the standard procedures of planning/design and construction practices of the building/facility system as a whole.

These include quantifiable indicators such as energy use and its associated greenhouse gas emissions. It might also include material consumption from an embodied energy or resource use perspective. Social factors or qualitative indicators may be evaluated but are rarely placed or juxtaposed alongside these quantifiable indicators. A one-dimensional approach will be limiting because sustainable development includes both environmental and social factors. This paper describes the methodologies that have been developed to assess housing developments against five quite different criteria. These are: energy use, resource use, neighbourhood character, neighbourhood connectedness and diversity. In each case, high and low sustainability practice has been identified so that ranking is possible. These methodologies have then been tested by evaluating a typical precinct (approximately 400m by 400m) of a 1970-80s housing development in a suburb of Geelong. The rankings of the particular precinct have then been combined in a visual way to assist in the evaluation of the housing in a more holistic way. The results of this evaluation method are presented, along with a discussion of the strengths and weaknesses of the methodologies.

The study aims to reflect on the house’s minimum living space through its functional and spacial distribution features throughout architectural models of the so-called ‘social housing’, where budget restraints coexist with the need to dignify the habitat.
Architectural movements are mentioned through their practical and theoretical ideals who express the principles of spacial definition and its correlation with the individual.
Spacial and formal restrains are therefore defined as the main concerns in architectural research, meaning that ‘minimum’ thinking does also apply to a daily architectural practice, where there’s a need to balance the ‘desired’ house with the ‘possible house’.
The importance of the present proposal is manifested in an evaluation of Architecture as a comprehensive practice, analyzed in its contemporary context and establishing parameters that will be applied in new housing proposals.
A voyage throughout the 20th century will be done, where architectural models will be analyzed, establishing a correlation between theory and its application. Are they still pertinent when applied in an architecture of the ‘less privileged’, where reduced financial and area possibilities are a common restraints? Are a movement’s ideals always applicable to a regulated and controlled architecture? And these movements: are they something pragmatic or autistic turning a practical art into an oral art? Can they differentiate themselves through time or there are a number of constants that ignore different theories and spatial solutions?
The proposed paper therefore tries to define Architecture as a widespread benefit capable to define and apply criteria so it can accomplish its intentions.

The liveability of a settlement is determined by the quality of the built and natural environment in addition to the... more The liveability of a settlement is determined by the quality of the built and natural environment in addition to the activities that take place within that environment. As it is widely accepted the “quality of life” has three broad dimensions: social, economic and environmental well being and may be measured using objective and subjective indicators (Marans and his colleagues, Campbell, Connelly, Lee, Greenley and Grenberg, VanKamp et. al.). The physical quality of the residential environment and housing are among the basic indicators of the quality of life of any given community. In addition to the provision of shelter, residential environment provides for a healthy family life, care of the children and personal fulfilment. This study aims to analyse the quality of the residential environment in Istanbul with the help of objective indicators. The quality of life in Istanbul like other metropolitan cities around the world is closely related to the physical quality of the residential environment as well as the social and economic environment. Housing indicators like the high rate of population growth, unbalanced income distribution, low income per capita, all point to the existence of a housing problem in Istanbul. During the fast urbanisation period after 1950’s, local authorities have not been able to supply land with urban services and, the number of housing units constructed annually by the private sector in compliance with building codes has been below 10 units per 1000 population. As a consequence, illegal/informal housing has started to invade the water basins, forests and high quality agricultural land. Unauthorised residential areas in geologically hazardous zones create serious problems for the City as it is situated in a dangerous seismic zone. The study was undertaken by the Housing and Quality of Life Research Group in BIMTAS, Istanbul Metropolitan Planning Office as part of the preparation of Istanbul Strategic Plan. The research concentrated on two aspects of the quality of life: i)quality of the physical environment in residential areas and ii) quality of life with respect to social and economic indicators and the satisfaction of the inhabitants. The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss the results of the first aspect that comprised the use of indicators related to the physical environment, such as the neighbourhood densities, construction intensity (Floor Area Ratios and Building coverage Ratios), house types ratios of liveable open space, recreation area, car parks, proximity to various urban facilities, and urban centres, schools, parks, playgrounds, shopping,, building heights, house prices and rents.,illegal developments, housing developed on water basins, forest land, and geologically hazardous zones etc. The data used in the study was collected from 900 locations that were randomly selected from clusters of low-medium and high density residential areas with lowmedium and high land values. The preliminary results of the survey were used to broadly demonstrate the problem areas with respect to the various indicators. Relationship between various indicators of the quality of residential environment and land values was analysed and their economic relevance was discussed.Key words: quality of life, physical environment, residential,Istanbul

Inspired by a small demonstration... more How has housing played a role in incorporating immigrants into English society? Inspired by a small demonstration project in Sheffield, Twice the Terrace, which aimed to convert two small bye-law houses into a single larger house appropriate for a large and traditional Pakistani family, the paper traces the history of this house type using the concept of living-in-space to explore not only the social practices of families living inside them, but also the way they affect relationships outside the property itself. Using Keith’s concept of racialization as being equally about how specific ethnic groups re-invent themselves over time and how urban space provides a stage on which the performance of re-invention simultaneously alters the urban object itself, the paper traces the history of the demonstration project as it emerged from a localised struggle to prevent the demolition of the area within which it was located (Keith, 2005). The paper concludes that while houses play important roles in incorporating immigrants into English society, it is not the same role everywhere at all times. Both localisation and temporisation are important processes in grasping the wider role of racialization in urban change.

This paper describes an ongoing research concerned with the insertion of information, communication and automation technology (ICAT) in domestic spaces.
ICAT have a key role in the strategy for achieving environmental and social sustainability. Both at the building and at the dwelling levels, these technologies can reduce energy consumption and environmental impact, since they can efficiently manage consumptions and help reduce waste.
These technologies also promote social sustainability by contributing for improving the quality of life of inhabitants by providing residents with new opportunities for services
access, greater community participation, as well as assistance in daily domestics tasks.
In this paper we focus on elderly and handicapped people and, in this context, we discuss the role of ICAT in promoting individual autonomy and social inclusion. As a result of the investigation, we will define the minimum set of ICAT suitable for integration in dwellings targeted at these social groups.

The study focus on a specific building type (“rabo-de-bacalhau”) built between 1945 and 1965. The final research objective is the definition of design guidelines to support architects in the adaptation of existing residential areas with the purpose of ICAT incorporation and the creation of diversity within the building and the sorrowing residential area. The goal is to use Shape Grammar and Space Syntax as tools to identify and encode the principles and rules behind the adaptation of the existing houses.

The relocation from Kamgar Putala slum to a housing society at Hadapsar was organized by a community-led NGO partnership in 2004. The housing development was coordinated by the local NGO Shelter Associates with significant community participation. The housing has been revisited in 2010 to evaluate the sustainability of the resettlement project's delivery model via stakeholder perception. The process of organizing for resettlement after natural disaster is described along with the implementation and evaluation of the new housing nearly six years after initial occupation. The strong partnership approach overcame a series of political and financial hurdles at various stages of the relocation project. The story of resettling Kamgar Putala is detailed alongside an outline of the current political climate for an alternative slum-upgrading policy in India and Pune. The advantages of an empowered community supported by an influential local NGO demonstrate a commendable team effort which has tackled the threat of floods. The paper highlights the merits of a community-led partnership approach to housing development for achieving sustainable urban development as well as the alleviation of poverty in a developing context.
