In this In this paper I look at the Romanian homeopathic practice through the conceptual lens of the communities of... more In this In this paper I look at the Romanian homeopathic practice through the conceptual lens of the communities of practice. Through interviews with homeopathic practitioners, I investigate the ways they accumulate and share their specific knowledge. Also, I inquire about some homeopathic practices and concepts, such as the consult and the vital force. Then, I present the way homeopaths combine methods that are specific to their practice with biomedical techniques and procedures in order to obtain a better diagnostic and also how they evaluate the usefulness of homeopathic knowledge in comparison with biomedical knowledge. Although this is a small scale research, it sheds light on the importance of the continuous learning process and knowledge sharing that goes on between homeopathic practitioners.

In the society of the risk, we have just began to question the priority of science as an undisputed form of knowledge.... more In the society of the risk, we have just began to question the priority of science as an undisputed form of knowledge. Medicine is the science that most of the population has more contact in their the daily life, so it's attacked by new therapies and forms of knowledge who aspire to share medicine's official legitimacy. Homeopathy is perhaps most important of these alternative health knowledges. In this paper I analyze the discourses of both therapies, homeopathic and official, starting off with two exemplary texts that mutually attacks the opposite position. I use the analysis of metaphors method, understanding with Ricoeur or Emmanuel Lizcano that metaphors aren't just a simple aesthetic resource, but a central mental founding in every discourse. Results aim that both knowledges are not much different in the way they conceive the body, the disease or the role of the health-maker.

La medicina homeopática revolucionó la medicina en el siglo XIX. Su visión de la salud y la enfermedad rompió con muchas prácticas médicas dominantes que atentaban contra la salud de los seres humanos y que formaban parte de un negocio en la venta de medicamentos en manos de boticarios y médicos. Eso cambió con las efectivas microdosis homeopáticas que les quitó el negocio a los boticarios. Esa misma situación se presenta hoy con la industria farmacéutica mundial, que se ve amenazada por el avance de la homeopatía en el ámbito mundial.

In Colombia there is a long tradition of practitioners and Medical Doctors who have practiced homeopathy, but as it happens in most of the world, homeopathy has always been in a subordinate condition in comparison to the dominant biomedical model. Homeopathy arrived at our country around 1825 and 1830. Some few doctors started to practice in those early years, but most of the medical community was hostile to the new medical doctrine. As in many countries, homeopathy in Colombia has lived through hard times and many struggles. It was introduced by the doctors Juan Pardo and José Arrubla whom began to bring the first books and materials to the country. In those early days few libraries existed. Probably the coastal cities of Barranquilla, Cartagena and Santa Marta, in the Caribbean Sea, were visited by homeopaths of other countries, but there has not been any research to confirm that assertion. Consequently the history of homeopathy in Colombia is basically expressed in the records found at the capital city of Bogotá in the Andean region of the country.
