In effect, how new was the research university at all? This is an article-length review of William Clark, 'Academic Charisma and the Origins of the Research University' (2006). Through a survey of Germany, England, and the Netherlands, it's pointed out that an intense focus on writing production in the university, the institution of the superstar professor, and the teaching of a select few to become new professors were all firmly established elements of the 16th- and 17th-century university just as well as at Enlightenment Halle (for example). Lastly, was it a move for the better when learning retreated inside the walls of the university and out of the early modern republic of letters?

In the Renaissance, as it turns out, literary history was widely pursued alongside interpretive commentary and textual criticism. Perhaps the thorniest question Renaissance scholars faced in this field, as well as the most resonant for 21st-century readers, centered on the birth of tragedy in ancient Greece. What had been the tragedy's original form, and in particular, had it included music in any way? To attempt to answer was to engage with Aristotle's 'Poetics' in a very unfamiliar way, and moreover to compare Greek with Roman sources imaginatively and boldly. Angelo Poliziano, Francesco Robortello, Pier Vettori, and Francesco Patrizi da Cherso are discussed.

He later wrote a supplement in two books, first published as late as 1723 by the Dutch scholar Pieter Burman (Leiden, Thesaurus antiquitatum et historiarum Italiae, to. IX pars VII). This article puts Capriolo's biography on a new footing, enriched by new archival documents, and describes the ms tradition of the last two books of the Chronica, in which scholars and statesmen of the early 17th century such as Gerardus Joannes Vossius, Domenico Molino and Ottavio Rossi were directly involved.

In 1605, the text of a classic inscription was registered in one of the communal administrative books. Then, in 1607, a manuscript of Iacopo Malvezzi’s Chronicon, written by Tommaso Mercanda in 1545, was acquired by the commune. This book still lies in the city historical archive (Brescia, Archivio di Stato, Archivio Storico Civico 1463). On the same occasion another manuscript was bought too: a copy of Cristoforo Soldo’s vernacular chronicle, indentifiable as the manuscript now Brescia, Biblioteca Queriniana, K VI 23, copied by the same Tommaso Mercanda.

Their work, which had historical and political implications, is seen as part of a wider tradition of studies of local Paduan antiquities and of an international scholarly network which created contacts between statesmen, historians and philologists in the Republic of Venice, Holland, France and Enlgand.

The aim of this paper is to research the transition from the more basic and general scribal training to the magical-mantic specialistic apprenticeship in the Neo-Assyrian period through the analysis of colophons, letters, and reports of the ummânu's. A special emphasis on scribal families traditions, on the interdisciplinary approach, on the practical training as well as on the travels abroad with the purpose of further learning, is given.

The paper assesses interdisciplinary communication, the impact of new theoretical paradigms (feminism, postcolonial Studies, etc.) in a specifically Spanish setting, and the disciplinary transformations and new publishing opportunities associated to the new media ecology. Close attention is paid to issues of cultural colonization, disciplinary marginality and the contextual roots of academic praxis.
