Hobbes offered a powerful challenge to this way of thinking about moral philosophy, a challenge that attacked the accounts of motivation, ends, and the interests on which these accounts were premised. This essay concentrates on a group of philosophers who responded to Hobbes’ challenge or whom were important background for this response. Early modern moral philosophy also tended to write in a number of literary forms that are revealing as to their practice and their assumptions. One form, the maxim, is discussed in detail as well as some who used it. The essay concludes by considering some of the philosophers important to the transition to more familiar ways of understanding moral philosophy.
