The sacrament of baptism is at the centre of a large theological debate between the middle of XIIth century and the middle of XIIIth century. Starting with the position assumed by Peter Lombard in his Sentences a progressive study of the various aspects of baptism is developed. The main theologians engaged in it were Stephen Langton, William of Auxerre, Alexander of Hales and Hugues of Saint-Cher. Their doctrines had an evident influence on the positions of the subsequent authors such as Bonaventure of Balneoregio and Thomas Aquinas.

In this second instalment, the author continues the metaphysical dialogue by comparing Eckhart's concept of the Son and the Isma'ili notion of the Universal Intellect (al-'Aql al-Kull) in light of concept of the Divine Intellect. The author then explores the relationship between the Father and the Son as understood by Meister Eckhart and compares this to the relationship between the Divine Command and Universal Intellect as conceived in Isma'ili gnosis. This is followed by a comparison of Eckhart's concept of the Holy Spirit and the Isma'ili concept of the Universal Soul (al-Nafs al-Kull) in relation to the notion of Divine Love. The author also highlights the correspondence between the figures of Christ and his Virgin Mother in Christianity and the figures of the Imam and his Hujjah in Isma'ili Islam. The article concludes by exploring how metaphysical commonalities can inform and enlighten the Christian and Muslim dialogues in the modern world.

A reading of the history of the development of religious freedom from a fringe notion limited to the inside of Newgate Prison in England and the backwoods of Massachusetts to a moral pillar of world civilization seems to suggest that the answer is yes. Religious freedom as an idea developed by evangelical Christians provides a positive apologetic in the sense that it demonstrates the beneficial effect of Christianity upon humanity. While the idea does not serve as a first order apologetic, i.e. the resurrection, the idea serves to strengthen the case that Christianity preserves, edifies, and refines human existence and community. In this way, religious freedom, undergirded by Scripture and articulated by Christians, is part of a broad cumulative case arguing for the truth of the Christian faith.
