Governmentality and Youth Volunteering Policy

This paper will explore why volunteering policy has developed this instrumental tendency in recent history. It will analyse Michel Foucault’s theories of governmentality, and use these as a frame to consider the advances made in youth policy over the last half century, but with particular regard to volunteering policy in the last 15 years. Using governmentality as a tool of analysis, it will argue that volunteering policy has become a device to responsibilize younger generations; a method to improve the authority of the young over their own lives and their local areas, whilst moulding behaviour which brings about individual and collective wellbeing. It is also argued that this follows a natural progression of youth policies to tackle the ‘problem of youth’.

The sacrament of baptism is at the centre of a large theological debate between the middle of XIIth century and the middle of XIIIth century. Starting with the position assumed by Peter Lombard in his Sentences a progressive study of the various aspects of baptism is developed. The main theologians engaged in it were Stephen Langton, William of Auxerre, Alexander of Hales and Hugues of Saint-Cher. Their doctrines had an evident influence on the positions of the subsequent authors such as Bonaventure of Balneoregio and Thomas Aquinas.

Dr Regan and Mr Snide
Do most academic historians of revolutionary and post-revolutionary Ireland conform to a ‘constitutional narrative’, driven by a moral imperative to subvert republican interpretations of Irish history? Has their shared political agenda led to widespread and deliberate distortion, suppression, ‘elision’, and even falsification of the evidential record? Have they repeatedly abused their academic positions by indulging in tendentious ‘public history’ under the cloak of scholarship? Is it high time to confront and root out ‘the insidious influence of Irish public histories presented as objective historical evidence’? Have negligent or manipulative supervisors and examiners of youthful ‘revisionists’ colluded with doctoral students in perpetrating such historical malpractices? Is it the duty of supervisors to interfere with the manner in which students collect, select, interpret, and present evidence? Does ‘the credibility of the historical profession’ in Ireland demand ‘urgent attention’ to the failure of one particular supervisor, and one particular examiner, to ‘uphold disciplinary standards’ in the case of one particular student? Should those responsible be publicly excoriated? In the view of John M. Regan, presented in a series of articles including a recent contribution to History Ireland, the answer in all cases is an emphatic ‘yes’, expressed (so he would have us believe) more in sorrow than in anger.

The end of sports history?: from sports history to sports studies.

The 1999 conference of the Australian Society for Sports History (ASSH)
sparked interesting and lively debate before, during and after the
proceedings. Some ASSH members appeared uneasy discussing the ‘end’
of their field which, as an academic enterprise, is younger than most of
the participants. Yet, beyond the obvious reference to Francis Fukiyama’s
‘The End of History’, the topic is certainly relevant for a number of
reasons. Sports historians have not extensively debated the impact of the
postmodern assault on ‘History’ as either a tool of modernist discourse
and discursive power relationships,2 or a set of practices that follow what
Appleby, Hunt and Jacob call ‘the heroic model of science’.3 Many
postmodern critics have called for, or announced, the ‘end of history’. If
history is at an end, then surely the implication would be that there is also
an end to sports history as we know it.
For those who have been following the ‘mainstream’ historical
literature over the past decade or so, it is readily apparent that the
challenges of postmodernism and poststructuralism have been debated
extensively amongst historians, and between historians and critics of
‘(H)history’ who do not classify themselves as ‘historians’ (and who
‘historians’ reject as members of the historical profession). These debates
are perhaps best summarised in The Postmodern History Reader edited by
Keith Jenkins.4 Brian Palmer’s Descent into Discourse, published in 1990,
offers the best sustained critique from the left of the postmodernist attack
on history.5 For some, the end of history is to be welcomed; for others the
‘descent into discourse’ is problematic and serves only to obfuscate the
continuation of society and global capitalist development.

Against the unity prayer of Jesus in the gospel of John chapter 17, divisions within Christianity have been common from the beginning. New steps for unity are outlined that provide grass-roots opportunities in local churches and communities.
Fundamental to the new unity movement are principles and a change in paradigm that give a fresh approach to the ancient problem of divisions among people who identify themselves as followers of Jesus.
