Introducing programming skills in education

It also examines what can be learned from ‘hacker’ culture. It does not cover formal computer science education but focuses on the interwoven histories of computer programming and education, and their impressive output. The abstract was submitted before government minister Michael Gove proposed promising changes to UK ICT education, the idea being to liberate educators from an ICT that teaches little more than the use of proprietary applications such as Excel or Powerpoint, and begins to draw on some of the creative solutions that have been under continuous and often connected development since the late 1960s.
Arduino Microcontrollers and the Queen's Hamlet: Utilitarian and Hedonized DIY Practices in Contemporary Electronic Culture (ACADIA 2011)

My argument is that maker culture has been co-opted by consumer hobby culture, but this is not necessarily detrimental because it provides an important outlet for personal exploration, increases an understanding of how electronic media actually works and assists individuals to be actors in a culture that is increasingly complex, technological and digitized.
