This article contributes to understandings of the internationalization of Higher Education by investigating the extent to which a stages approach is evident in the overseas expansion of universities such that they beginning with exports before moving on to contractual arrangements, then joint ventures and finally the establishment of wholly owned subsidiaries. Focusing on the expansion of UK universities into the Chinese market, the findings from ten case studies reveal that universities do not follow a uniform market entry pattern. Moreover, evidence suggests that access to high level personal networks in China determines the development of high commitment entry modes.

This article investigates difficulties experienced by international Asian students studying in US graduate programs and how these difficulties were overcome. It suggests types of support educational practitioners can provide to help such students achieve their full potential.
This article draws on a sociological account of minority students' development and key roles institutional agents play in enabling students' access to resources and support necessary for their development (Stanton-Salazar, 1997).
The growth in the number of international students enrolled in postgraduate programs around the world, particulalry the number of students from Asia, warrants this particular investigation.
This paper is based on semi-structured interviews with fourteen international postgraduate students from nine departments studying at a university in the US, and the data were analysed using a grounded theory approach. The results show that the framework provided by Stanton-Salazar (1997) discussing the experience of ethnic minority students is useful in understanding the experience of international students..

The impact of globalization on higher education in developed nations has been well documented
by scholars over the past 20 years (Slaughter & Leslie, 1997; Slaughter & Rhoades, 2004;
Marginson & Considine, 2007). This study examines the impact of globalization on higher education
in a developing nation—Vietnam. It provides valuable insight to the history of education in Vietnam
and extends the current critique of the marketization and neo-liberal agendas to the context of higher
education in developing nations. The paper begins with a historical description of the changes that
have occurred in higher education over the past 20 years in Vietnam. Then, using a reflective analysis
framework, the researchers draw on institutional documents from the Vietnam National University—
Hanoi and key informant interviews to critically assess national policies and institutional practices.
The interviews and documents illustrat the ways in which the post-secondary institution, and thereby
sector, was pivotal national reconstruction and economic revitalization strategies. Findings suggest
that neo-liberal marketization forces were at work, even within a Marxist political structure. Future
studies might examine these forces across the full range of postsecondary institutions in Vietnam to
determine if there have been similar changes in practices. Finally, an international comparative examination might provide useful evidence of lesson drawing (Rose, 1993) across developing nations or
isomorphism across institutions.
Networks of practice in science education research: A global context

We present a brief analysis of recent authorship in top-tier science journals to demonstrate the salience of English language dominance as an issue in our field and we share narrative reflections from 11 international science education researchers offering perspectives from the field about the challenges faced by researchers in local and global contexts. Using an interpretive research stance, we discuss these narrative reflections to illuminate the role of personal and collective responsibility of individuals, organizations and institutions within local social networks of practice to recognize the relationship between capital, power, and equitable participation within a global science education research community. We conclude by discussing some existing structures within local networks of practice that relegate some members of the community to peripheral participatory roles in the global community and we suggest new structures to support individuals to more equitably contribute to the production of knowledge in the field of science education in ways that benefit not only individuals, but also the global science education community

International Studies programs have been in existence for quite some time, however with the world becoming more interdependent, their necessity is more important now than ever. The international education surge is possibly due to the fact that the 21st century requires vastly different skills from those of the past. Students entering the workforce are now confronted with the need for highly specialized skill sets that were once not necessary, but are now essential to stay competitive for jobs in the global economy. The purpose of this preliminary research is to gain a better understanding of the current level of student awareness regarding global perspective and whether pursuing international studies will prepare students to be more open to diverse attitudes than other majors at Texas State University-San Marcos. This research will use Robert G. Hanvey's, An Attainable Global Perspective, as the basis for what an international studies curriculum should include to foster student perspective change and willingness to understand global interdependence and its implications. This will be done by operationalizing Hanvey's article into a usable survey questionnaire. The questionnaire was created by taking each of Hanvey's five dimensions and breaking them down into measurable categories.
The results of the questionnaire show that both groups of students are often equal in their awareness of global perspectives. The questions that showed significant differences between the groups did favor the International Studies students as more cognizant of the topic discussed. However, this did not occur often enough to prove that International Studies premajors at Texas State University have a better grasp of global perspective than the other group of students.

This article in Turkish is about the takeover process of the Istanbul Bilgi University by a for-profit university company, namely Laureate Education Inc between 2007 and 2011. This takeover has triggered a radical restructuration of the university formerly known for its focus on humanities. But this brusk take-over has also triggered a joint unionization movement by academic staff, administrative staff and the blue collar workers of the university. This article deals firstly with the rather recent phenomenon of the 'for profit university' and its relationships with the finance-led capitalism and the re-regulatory state. Furthermore it explores into the concrete relationships of Laureate Education Inc. with the Istanbul Bilgi University. It concludes with an overall description of the first unionization movement at a foundation university in Turkey, its aims, methods, struggles within and shortcomings.

"Numerous studies have engaged the question of the globalization of U.S. higher education, but this landmark volume is the first to gather essays from scholars who have worked in institutions from around the world that specifically model themselves on 'American-style' universities. This book merits careful reading by anyone interested the future of higher education." —Donald E. Pease, Ted and Helen Geisel Chair of the Humanities at Dartmouth

Recent criticism has emphasised the difficulty of implanting these values into culturally different classrooms and challenged the idea of 'educational neocolonialism' that takes place in the process of such implantation. If teaching is to be effective and ethical, and if it is to avoid the pitfalls of neocolonialism - it needs to reflect the cultural specificity of the learning environment. Moreover, blind indoctrination into Western/American educational principles in the Middle East may potentially lead to their debilitation and eventual devaluing. In the terminology of Jean Baudrillard, American-style teaching can become a simulacrum of other cultural realities, and the classroom itself can become a 'map without a territory'. On this reading, the American-style university emerges as an exile rather than an invader. As a hybrid of two cultures, it is dependent on a continuous act of reinvention and reinterpretation. Thus, by calling into question 'the real' of the American-style university in the Middle East, this paper will also attempt to suggest new meanings and underscore the potential for cross-cultural education in the region.

Multinational Colleges and Universities: Leading, Governing, and Managing International Branch Campuses

In the past ten years, universities from around the world have been expanding their global reach by creating outposts in multiple countries. The most significant manifestation of this phenomenon is the creation of International Branch Campuses (IBCs) where students can attend classes, engage in student activities and earn a degree from the home institution with never actually visiting the institution’s home country.
Because IBCs fall outside of traditional institutional associations and operate in dislocated geopolitical regions, there are few opportunities for faculty and administrators of these entities to discuss common challenges and opportunities. This volume brings together researchers and experienced administrators to provide a scholarly overview and practical reflection about this growing and still volatile sub-section of higher education.
The objective of this volume is to address issues of leadership, administration, and governance of branch campuses by using scholarly fieldwork and selected institutional case studies. In exploring the internal and external dynamics of IBCs, this volume includes chapters that address three broad themes: practical administrative strategies, student and academic issues, and institutional environments, cultures, and policy arenas. The volume is important for various audiences including higher education administrators and faculty and staff living and working in the IBC environment.

The programme highly interactive, emphasising communication between students. Taking the variation in participation as the point of departure, a discourse analysis aiming at analysing the contingencies contributing to the pattern of communication in the programme. Data consist of a variety of texts, such as on-line web-documents, written notes, and other documents, such as narratives that participants wrote about their life and its relation to participation in the programme. The results of this study show that the official discourse of the programme as a text, with its emphasis on equity, change and development gets subordinated the discourses produced and reproduced by the students in the programme as a discursive practice and social practice. The use of English as the lingua franca contributed to a mistake anxiety, which for some students was hampering their communication in the programme. Aspects of the material world such as the vast differences in the efforts and costs for participating in the programme were also highly interrelated to the shaping of socio-culturally situated identities among the students and thereby contributing to the variation in frequency in participation. The students‟ accounts reveal that there are fragments of an alternative discourse emerging, based on mutual concern and friendship, which might suggest a potential for changing the communicative pattern in the programme.
University "small worlds" in Globalisation

When, in 1984, David Lodge published his famous caustic novel Small World: An Academic Romance, he brought into the limelight the global campus formed by networks of researchers throughout the world, or at least from its richest parts. But the daily round of the large majority of academics, except for certain brilliant scientists well versed in international symposiums, and some others suspected of using and misusing the charms of "academic tourism", was at that time marked by national realities.
Twenty years on, now that the internet has become a commonplace and with the advent of the knowledge society, Globalisation seems to bound the horizon of all those involved in higher education (HE). Whether it is a question of restructuring courses via Bologna's two cycle degree structure, creating regional centres for higher education, or redirecting university governance towards greater autonomy, most reforms appear to be guided by the concern of answering the challenges of internationalisation. After "Erasmus", the "Bologna Process" or the "Shanghai Ranking" have become familiar concepts for all academics.
What stance does research take with regard to these processes and what light can it shed on this Globalisation of higher education? To what extent are changes in university steering, in the academic profession, or in the development of tuition fees truly "national" or truly "international"? Through a selection of articles, recent works and reports, this issue gives a progress report on these questions at French and international levels.

Globalisation has become a buzzword in the 21st century which is often discussed and debated at all possible forums. The holistic concept of globalisation comprise of integration of cultures, economies, political systems, technology, finances, operations and even philosophies. The rapid proliferation of means of information technology, communication and transport has increased connectedness of the people located across the globe. This has led to emergence of a virtual ‘global village’.
In the rapidly globalising world, wealth has assumed the most significant place and people across the world are running after money. In the quest to gain more and more wealth, individuals and organisations do not hesitate to use ways and means that are either fair or unfair. As a result in education sector, the fields of study that enables students to make quick money by easy means such as management, engineering, medical etc. are gaining increasing popularity. Students and their parents exhibit little interest in the field of Fine Arts.
The paper makes a critical analysis of the factors affecting the decisions made by students in choosing a discipline that include, their interests, the prospects both in terms of jobs and field practice. Besides, the paper makes some useful suggestions so as to make the Fine Art discipline more relevant in view of globalisation forces which includes: up-dating and adaptation of the course contents in the ever-changing environment, use of modern pedagogical tools and equipments, regular training of faculty members, integration of information and communication technology including computers and internet and facilitating students in displaying and marketing their art-work and extending support by the educational institute in their placement.
