How can we achieve both strategic success and contribute towards sustainable use of the Earth’s resources?
Is care for the environment one of the top strategic issues that we face as we enter the new millennium - or are there more pressing challenges?
Why have we seen such ineffective government policy development and such little action in regards to achieving sustainable development?
Is care for the environment just a subset of the task of caring for human culture and diversity? Or is should we ask the question the other way around?
How do market-led companies generate the investment funds required to establish products for a ‘green’ world - when the market dominance of existing product suppliers is so great?
Is globalisation a contributor to the environmental crisis - and if so, is it possible for a company or nation to distance itself from the process of globalisation?
Is business really a battlefield? If so, then how do you fight most effectively for survival, let alone for success and eco-sustainability?
How can we develop strategic leaders - general managers, consultants, policy makers, and educators - who can move forward wisely to meet the challenges of our ‘world to come’?
These are just some of the questions that are addressed in the Proceedings of the 8th Annual Educators Conference of the New Zealand Strategic Management Society as conference attendees focussed on the issue of developing strategies for both eco-sustainability and enterprise success.
Conference aims
The aims of the NZSMS conference were to:
•Share the results of current professional practice, research, teaching, and consulting projects, especially those projects relating to themes of significant strategic relevance to New Zealand and the Asia-Pacific Basin.
•Deepen our shared understanding of the interests and talents of our professional colleagues as a basis for developing collaborative research, consulting, publishing, or teaching initiatives
•Discuss and critique proposals for future research, publishing, teaching, and policy development initiatives
•Report on the results of contributions made at relevant international conferences and related forums
•Develop professional skills and confidence in preparing and communicating the results of our professional works
•Identify professional development issues of significance to strategic managers, directors, educators, consultants, and trainers.

This article aims to address the issue of Sustainable Development (SD) in an evolutionary perspective within its multidisciplinary scope. The complexity of developments for sustainability has frequently proven difficult in its implementation, evaluation and effective communication.It was our intention to provide an outline of the diverse views on the subject, focusing on globalization as a change of attitude towards sustainability.It is a review of terminology associated with the SD and its multiple interpretations.It is referenced the apparent and irrelevant impact of initiatives to solve the economic, social and environmental problem. It emphasizes the influence and importance of strategies and the positioning of SMEs on the way to SD in the policy of act local think global.

Kenya’s cut-flower industry is primarily based along the shores of Lake Naivasha, a Ramsar Convention protected global... more Kenya’s cut-flower industry is primarily based along the shores of Lake Naivasha, a Ramsar Convention protected global wetland. This desk-based multi-disciplinary research identifies the extent of some of the avoidable social harms of this industry, highlights potential problems for Kenya’s economy, and the implications for social justice. Kenya experiences water scarcity and, as a consequence of unsustainable industry practices, water is becoming ‘blue gold’ (Barlow and Clarke 2002). This has resulted in intertribal conflict and food security is an issue for Kenya’s poor. Flowers are 90 per cent water, so Kenya is involved in a ‘virtual water trade’ with the UK, one of the wettest countries in the world (Allan 2003). Water scarcity has implications for inter-generational, intra-generational and human rights. We also need to consider other life forms and the environment itself. The short-term economic gains of this industry will have long-term consequences with wide-reach - in spatial, temporal and economic terms. Power appears to allow corporations to continue relatively unchallenged, yet if Kenya were to tighten up its regulations, the industry could relocate to emerging markets. Considering these issues from the social harm perspective ensures that harms that are not designated as crimes for whatever reason, are given the recognition and attention they warrant.

In this way, the author begins with the issue of the current reporting of the impact of corporate activity on a voluntary basis and with great latitude in its application. Then, the author insists on exposing the total absence of the element of a living wage in CSR standards, despite the fact that not paying a living wage constitutes a rational decision of business entities to exploit their workers, which is tantamount to a predatory practice. A situation that not only should be enough for civil society to not grant good corporate citizenship to any company practicing it, but that also constitutes a violation of a basic human right: the right to live a dignified life.

The first part discusses both its current infant state as a key factor in social justice and as a strategic element in corporate business best practice. The second part presents our own CSR concept.
While there is diversity in emphasis and specialisation in the development and management of CSR by GCS, the timidity indemanding that the impact of corporate activity generates equitable benefits for all stakeholders is very evident. Often enough, the mission in the promotion of CSR appears to be more the offering of a vehicle for companies to be perceived positively, without true congruence with the intended principles of social responsibility, instead of demanding an equitable and sustainable tridimensional impact. The voluntary approach to CSR, the latitude enjoyed by corporations in its application, the lack of homogenous standards and processes, and, especially, the clear avoidance of living wages –the fundamental element of social justice and a key factor in the achievement of

There are some in Taiwan who predict pure doom and gloom at the rise of the hulking beast across the Strait. However, with Japanese companies preferring to use Taiwanese to represent them in China and China’s own acceptance of Taiwanese living and working on its soil, the anticipative and astute here can potentially have a great deal to look forward to.
It does mean, however, that those unwilling or unable to think beyond the confines of their own language and political borders will be left behind by our fledgling century. Bear in mind, though, that it’s not just Taiwanese we’re talking about now. It’s all of us.
