Widespread weathered glass on the surface of Mars

Here we use near-infrared spectra acquired by the Mars Express OMEGA (Observatoire pour la Minéralogie, l'Eau, les Glaces, et l'Activité) imaging spectrometer to show that these sediments exhibit spectral characteristics that are consistent with both high abundances of iron-bearing glass and silica-enriched leached rinds on glass. This interpretation is supported by observations of low-albedo soil grains with possible rinds at the Phoenix Mars Lander landing site in the northern lowlands. By comparison with the extensive glass-rich dune fields and sand sheets of Iceland, we propose an explosive volcanic origin for these glass-rich sediments. We also propose that the glassy remnant rinds on the sediments are the result of postdepositional alteration, as these rinds are commonly formed in arid terrestrial volcanic environments during water-limited, moderately acidic leaching. These weathered, glass-rich deposits in the northern lowlands are also colocated with the strongest concentrations of a major global compositional surface type previously identified in mid-infrared spectra, suggesting that they may be representative of global processes. Our results provide potential confirmation of models suggesting that explosive volcanism has been widespread on Mars, and also raise the possibilities that glass-rich volcaniclastics are a major source of eolian sand on Mars and that widespread surficial aqueous alteration has occurred under Amazonian climatic conditions.

MIDDLE ΒΥΖΑΝΤΙΝΕ GLASS BRACELETS. CONTRIBUTION TO ISSUES OF DISTRIBUTION, PRODUCTION, TYPOLOGY AND USE
Bracelets made of glass are known from Egypt since the second millennium BC, but remained rare in the Mediterranean
until at least the third century AD, during which period they
enjoyed a significant distribution. In regions of the development
of Islam they continued in use during Early Byzantine
times, whereas in Byzantium they disappeared, to reappear in
the Middle Byzantine period, in large numbers (Figs 2-12)
both in the Asian and the European territories, as well as in
regions under its political domination. After the wide diffusion
from the late ninth or the tenth century, bracelets gradually
decreased and by the thirteenth or fourteenth century had disappeared. The phenomenon of the reappearance of glass
bracelets in this period can be linked with the general political
and economic circumstances prevailing in the Byzantine
State, with the revival of cities and the reconstitution of the
empire. Correspondingly, the gradual disappearance of glass
bracelets in Late Byzantine times is linked with the economic
circumstances of the period, with the drastic reduction in citizens' purchasing ability. In contrast to Arab regions, the use
of glass bracelets was not revived in Ottoman times, nor even
in the nineteenth century, when they were particularly popular
throughout the rest of the Muslim world.

The project will re-examine all the fired clay from the excavation in order to trace possible fragments of glass crucibles and glass furnace lining. In addition, an examination of the slag will be made to secure the traces of silver processing - melting and refining - that could be expected in a mint, but are surprisingly sparse in the present find records. Hopefully, the examination can show if the production of means of payment, silver processing and glass-working going together, may be an expected 10th-11th century pattern.

Josiah McElheny: Modernism and Modernisms reviews conceptual glass sculptures and installations by McElheny propose an alternative to Modernism (singular) with colorful modernisms (plural). He says:
"What if we could replace the total transparency and monochrome of classical modernism with an over- looked, expressive branch of Modernist architectural history? One alternative McElheny says has “a prismatic set of colours and translucency that provides an impure set of infinite distortions rather than clarity”. Paul Scheerbart (1853-1915) envisioned such a world “based on political and spiritual ideals, not efficiency and logic”.

To my knowledge this is one of the largest collection ever recovered from one site, at least in Palestine. Until recently not much attention has been paid to these humbly objects. Therefore a study of form and function of these bracelets was performed as well as an analysis of their technological aspects.
