The purpose of the qualitative research was to assess models of education developed for the study to investigate how... more The purpose of the qualitative research was to assess models of education developed for the study to investigate how and when to incorporate second and third languages into the curriculum to improve language acquisition. Research indicates that L3 enhances and reinforces L2 and L1. The stratified systematic grounded theory study explored the perspectives of neurolinguists, psycholinguists, sociolinguists, and interdisciplinary education researchers to derive variables for constructing a new model of education. The outcome of the Internet survey revealed that 100% of the participants agreed that education must change and that teacher training must improve. Variables from the cross-disciplinary data contributed to the construction of an integrated model of multilingual education consisting of four primary models and other models to serve as tools for designing curriculum, instruction, and assessment as well as determining demographics and student meta-analysis of language abilities and storage in the brain. The first model emerged from the data to offer multilingual principles of education. The other primary models are macro, meso, and micro models. The macro model represents schools, instruction, assessment, and the curriculum cycle. The meso model depicts the developmental domains of the individual learner and includes a cyclical equation. The micro model delineates multilingual processing in the brain based on neurolinguistic research, variables from the current study, and Kees de Bot's bilingual adaptation of Levelt's language processing model. Recommendations include the incorporation of notional-functional pragmatic-aesthetic concepts as depicted in the models developed for the study and enhanced by input from published researchers with unique language and research repertoires who were located on four continents.

Bilingual or multilingual friends can be quite annoying. Especially if you’re stuck at a social gathering with the ones who repeatedly mention their language skills and utter phrases such as ”Well, if only you could read this novel in the original, you would have a much more profound understanding of what the author wanted to express…..”. Or the ones who like to cite French, German and Arabic language newspaper articles and then remind you with a thinly veiled pomposity that you may have a very narrow view of the world if you only rely on English-language news.
However, this latter group is becoming more rare, possibly because a formidable foe is taking the wind out of their sails: Google Translate. The excellent book “Is That a Fish In Your Ear” by David Bellos has a chapter entitled “The Adventure of Automated Language-Translation Machines”, which is especially thought-provoking, because it explains some key concepts about Google Translate and the future of automated translation.

En este trabajo describimos el género 'sinopsis de publicaciones en catálogos editoriales', atendiendo al modelo multinivel de clasificación textual de Ciapuscio 2002. Prestamos atención a las implicaciones funcionales y situacionales, semánticas y léxico-gramaticales que se manifiestan en el uso de este género como vehículo de comunicación.
En la segunda parte del trabajo llevaremos a cabo el estudio de un corpus de ejemplos de este género redactados en España y en países de habla alemana. Extraemos conclusiones referentes principalmente al nivel léxico-gramatical. Finalmente, reflexionamos acerca del empleo de ejemplos de este género textual como base de ejercicios prácticos y teórico-prácticos en las clases de traducción español-alemán-español.

In this paper, we describe the genre 'synopsis de at publishing house catalogues' on the basis of the multilevel model of textual classification by Ciapuscio (2002). We pay special attention to the functional, situational, semantic, lexical and grammatical factors which are present in the use of this genre as a vehicle of communication.
Secondly, we analyse a corpus of Spanish and German examples of the genre 'sinopsis', pointing out relevant differences at the lexical and grammatical level. Finally, we will show some practical uses of the genre 'synopsis' in the translation class (German-Spanish).

Previous studies, on one hand, provide inconclusive evidence for semantic decomposition of nominal compounds during acoustic presentation (Isel et al., 2003; Pratarelli, 1995;Wagner, 2003). On the other hand, morphological effects of decomposition have only been investigated in the visual modality which cannot be generalised to the auditory modality (Andrews, 1986; Sandra, 1990; Zwitserlood, 1994). The purpose of the present experiments was to answer the question of whether and how compound constituents are accessed from the mental lexicon during auditory comprehension, i.e. whether or not compounds are decomposed.

Polskie dunder
(= Polish dunder 'thunder').
Summary:
The Polish word dunder (earlier also: donder) is only used as a part of the expression niech cię/go/ją dunder świśnie! ‘damn you!, to hell with you/him/her!’, lit. ‘let a thunder strike you/him/her’ (in somewhat older Polish, a phrase like u dondra ‘damn!, (what) the devil!, (what) the hell!’, too, is attested). The only etymology of this word one can find today is that given by A. Brückner in his etymological dictionary (1927): < Germ. Donner ‘thunder’. However, Brückner was satisfied with a blank formulation “nd in lieu of nn” which does not actually explain reasons and the mechanism of change. The aim of this article is to show that it was not a High German word but, instead, the Low German or/and Dutch word donder ~ dunder ‘thunder’ that was borrowed into Polish and used in the expressions mentioned above.

I show that introspection is not sufficient support for theories and develop corpus querries for the cases under discussion. The paper concludes with some general remarks concerning the limits of corpus linguistics.

In Japanese, there are cases where a filler is required to maintain a certain degree of politeness within the speech as well as consideration towards the speaker. If the filler is omitted in such cases, Japanese natives will be more likely to interpret the utterance as rude or cold. This phenomenon – constituting an essential difference to fillers used in German, where fillers can hardly be thought of as element providing politeness within speech – cannot be explained solely by theories in previous research on coordinating functions in conversation or expression of mental operations.
As an explanation concerning this phenomenon I suggest the concept of display of attitude, which is thought to evoke different feelings to members of the Japanese and German societies respectively. Concerning Japanese, displaying a certain attitude – such as a mental operation or taking notice of somebody else – can have the effect of providing politeness, whereas in German the very same action is likely to be interpreted as uncertainty. In view of this discrepancy, it becomes clear, there are actually misunderstandings occurring between these two language cultures.
