Matlock: A Location Obfuscation Technique for Accuracy-Restricted Applications

Location-based information systems (LBIS) have shown growth in the last years thanks to the popularization of cheap... more Location-based information systems (LBIS) have shown growth in the last years thanks to the popularization of cheap GPS-enabled mobile devices with connectivity to the Internet. At the same time, users have made their locations more available than ever, representing a major privacy problem, as attackers could easily determine their victims’ common paths or actual locations. As a result, some techniques have been designed to protect the users’ private information while allowing Location Based Service systems (LBS) to continue growing. Location obfuscation is a technique that alters, substitutes, or generalizes the real location of the users to protect them against malicious attacks. Moreover, there are activities that require a high level of accuracy while also maintaining the protection of the location, such as fleet management or transportation of valuables. In this work, a light-weight and fully reversible location obfuscation technique named Matlock is presented. Matlock, based on matrix obfuscation, requires low computation per operation and hides the location in both spatial and temporal dimensions. The performance evaluation shows how this technique alters the location of paths from different geographical regions, produces a non-morphologically similar path to the original path, and enerates increasing distance functions between the original and the obfuscated paths, which together should reduce the probability of using estimation techniques to perform deobfuscation of the information.

In this exercise, a map displaying the geologic rock formations of Ohio as produced by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources was georeferenced and digitized. Some inaccuracies may exist, particularly with respect to the rock formations in the northwest portion of Ohio due to ambiguity in the map produced by the Ohio DNR.

Relationships are often found between socioeconomic variables and environmental factors for relatively small study... more Relationships are often found between socioeconomic variables and environmental factors for relatively small study regions. This research forms an exploratory data analysis using logistic regression to explore the (non-causal) relationships between socioeconomic variables from a national census (female literacy and involvement in economic alternatives to agricultural work) and environmental metrics extracted from Earth observation data. The relationships observed often supported those found in the literature and field observations. The research highlighted the limited but potentially valuable use of Earth observation data for monitoring socioeconomic conditions which may be used to target development assistance in the future.

This paper presents the results obtained from a review of the archaeological record available for the prehistoric site of Valencina de la Concepción (Seville, Spain), one of the most important settlements of SW Iberia in the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC. Two main variables, namely demography and metallurgical production, are examined in the light of both conventional and spatial statistical methods (with particular emphasis on significance testing) with the aim of assessing the wider issue of social complexity. Among the various conclusions emerging from this empirical study, two stand out. Firstly, neither the correlation between the total extension of the settlement and the complexity of its internal organisation, nor the spatial delimitation
between domestic/productive and funerary practices is as straightforward as previously claimed. Secondly, no simple, clear-cut statistical patterns are found in the spatial distribution of human remains or metal objects. These conclusions
provide the basis for a critique of currently held interpretations of Valencina de la Concepción as the political centre of an early state extending across the lower Guadalquivir valley.

Il lavoro presenta una metodologia di analisi della Forma Urbis che, facendo uso di strumenti matematici ed... more Il lavoro presenta una metodologia di analisi della Forma Urbis che, facendo uso di strumenti matematici ed informatici, permette di stimare al meglio il contenuto metrico della pianta marmorea tramite l’analisi del rapporto tra strutture riprodotte sulla Forma Urbis e la topografia attuale. Lo scopo è di giungere a conclusioni oggettive sul piano topografico e cartografico -ovvero stabilire se si tratta di una carta topografica o di una rappresentazione non dotata di contenuto metrico- sulla base di una metodologia analitica che consenta di convalidare nuove e vecchie ipotesi di collocazione dei frammenti della pianta marmorea. La validità della metodologia è testata su un insieme di frammenti relativi al Teatro di Marcello ed ai Templi del Foro Olitorio (cosiddetti Tempietti di S. Nicola in Carcere), per i quali si suggerisce una diversa collocazione.

- SPATIAL RESEARCH AND GEOMATIC RESOURCES APPLIED TO THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE FARAFRA OASIS (WESTERN DESERT, EGYPT) -... more - SPATIAL RESEARCH AND GEOMATIC RESOURCES APPLIED TO THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF THE FARAFRA OASIS (WESTERN DESERT, EGYPT) - Archaeological research in the desert areas of North Africa has long employed multidisciplinary field and laboratory methods. Increasingly, high precision instruments for mapping archaeological sites and surrounding landscapes over large areas have been used. The Italian Archaeological Mission in the Farafra Oasis - Egypt (IAMFO) of the Sapienza University of Rome benefits from three decades of experience during which it has kept pace with the latest developments in fieldwork techniques. Geomatic techniques, as used by the Area di Geodesia e Geomatica of the same university, are particularly important for archaeological research concerned with large geographical areas, althoughinnovative approaches appropriate for the scale of the work need to be used. This paper will show how survey work was organised in a number of stages, from the creation of accurate maps, to photoplans of significant structures and to DEMs of the different locations of finds. Processing the cartographic data from the Wadi el Obeiyid, moreover, made it possible to hypothesize which areas would have been suitable for human settlement, and these will form the focus of future surveys.

Ungulate populations exhibiting partial migration present a unique opportunity to explore the causes of the general... more Ungulate populations exhibiting partial migration present a unique opportunity to explore the causes of the general phenomenon of migration. The European roe deer Capreolus capreolus is particularly suited for such studies due to a wide distribution range and a high level of ecological plasticity. In this study we undertook a comparative analysis of roe deer GPS location data from a representative set of European ecosystems available within the EURODEER collaborative project. We aimed at evaluating the ecological factors affecting migration tactic (i.e. occurrence) and pattern (i.e. timing, residence time, number of migratory trips). Migration occurrence varied between and within populations and depended on winter severity and topographic variability. Spring migrations were highly synchronous, while the timing of autumn migrations varied widely between regions, individuals and sexes. Overall, roe deer were faithful to their summer ranges, especially males. In the absence of extreme and predictable winter conditions, roe deer seemed to migrate opportunistically, in response to a tradeoff between the costs of residence in spatially separated ranges and the costs of migratory movements. Animals performed numerous trips between winter and summer ranges which depended on factors influencing the costs of movement such as between-range distance, slope and habitat openness. Our results support the idea that migration encompasses a behavioural continuum, with one-trip migration and residence as its end points, while commuting and multi-trip migration with short residence times in seasonal ranges are intermediate tactics. We believe that a full understanding of the variation in tactics of temporal separation in habitat use will provide important insights on migration and the factors that influence its prevalence.

Pulp mill sludge produced in the Cova da Beira region (Portugal) contains organic matter (11–47%), nitrogen (38–2560mg N/kg) and phosphorus (167–370mg P/kg), which may be valuable for increasing soil productivity. The levels of heavy metals are below the limits recommended by legislation and the
amount of nitrogen and phosphorous to be introduced in soils does not present a risk for nutrient leaching.
After identifying the environmental and technical restrictions on its application, an area of 1650 ha was identified where the sludge can be applied in forage crops, fruit trees, olive groves and vineyards. A suitable area was also found for a biosolids storage centre. The use of GIS allowed to define a sludge
application index and to produce land-use suitability maps, which can be useful for sludge management.
