This neglects the subjective dimension of social integration, namely group identification. We present two studies comparing the effect exerted by social contact and group identification on mental health (e.g., depression, stress) across two different groups (family; army unit), demonstrating that group identification predicts mental health better than social contact. Methodologically, our findings show the necessity to include group identification measures as indicators of social integration in empirical research; theoretically, they support social identity researchers’ contention that group identification is a central mechanism in the processes leading from social integration to health.

In this research, depression and adjustment levels of adolescents between ages 15-
18 in secondary education and having both broken and unbroken families were
analyzed in respect of social support and family constitution. The role of family
constitution and social support on depression and adjustment level were investigated.
Instruments were conducted on 203 adolescents selected from secondary schools
in Kocaeli Provincial Centre, 101 of which are from unbroken families and 102
of which are from broken families. Of the students, 104 were male (%51.2) and 99
were female (%48.8). A mean age of the oarticipants was 16.46 years. In the study,
“The Hacettepe Personality Inventory” was used to collect the data about adolescents’
adjustment levels and “The Beck Depression Inventory” was used to collect the data
about their depression levels. The Perceived Social Support Scale was used to collect
the data on students’ perception of social support and personal information form was
used to determine family constitutions. It was found that the perception of social
support and family constitution considered to be influential on depression and the
adjustment levels of adolescents from broken and unbroken families composed a
significant diversity between groups. As to this finding, it was observed that the adolescents
from unbroken families are more adaptable in respect of their personal and
social adjustment levels than the students from broken families. It was also determined
that perceived social suppport has a significant effect on depression and adjustment
levels. It was stated that as social support increases, the adjustment level increases
likewise and depression levels decreases; the adjustment level has a linear
correlation with social support contrarily an inverse correlation with depression.

Alcohol-use disorders in adolescents are associated with gray matter (GM) abnormalities suggesting neurotoxicity by alcohol. However, recently similar GM abnormalities were found in non-drinking children with a family history (FH) of alcohol dependence (AD). The question thus rises whether these abnormalities represent a transient delay in brain maturation or a persistent risk factor for developing neuropsychiatric disorders, rather than a (neurotoxic) consequence of AD. This study investigated whether a FH of AD in non-drinking adults is associated with abnormal GM-volumes similar to those observed in drinking and non-drinking adolescents with a FH of AD. Methods. GM-images were analyzed using Voxel-Based Morphometry in non-alcoholics with (FH+; N = 36) and without (FH-; N = 107) familial AD. Additionally we controlled for possible confounders: diagnosis of depression/anxiety, childhood trauma and familial depression/anxiety. Results. Smaller GM-volumes were shown in the right parahippocampal gyrus in FH+ compared with FH-. Results were unaffected by confounders. Conclusions. We demonstrated an effect of familial AD in non-alcoholic adults on GM volume in the parahippocampal gyrus, similar to drinking and non-drinking FH+ adolescents. These findings suggest that GM abnormalities in the parahippocampal gyrus represent a persistent biological susceptibility for AD or related psychopathology and not neurotoxicity of alcohol or delayed brain maturation.

The reason I am speaking about death today is two-fold. First, I have been somewhat preoccupied with the concept of death since entering a new decade of my life. I no longer believe in the evangelical vision of heaven I learned about in my youth; but as an uncomfortable “un”-Christian, I also have no satisfactory vision to replace it. Or rather, there are many visions I find appealing, but none that I “believe in,” as I had believed in heaven. My family is getting older, my parents have been sick in the last few years, and I often feel that I have more to lose now than I used to.
My second reason for considering death today is that last Wednesday, Mimi, our family cat of 24 years—yes, 24—passed away. After spending all nine of her lives living, Mimi could no longer eat and was suffering. My mother had her put down after we all said goodbye; we held a funeral for her and buried her among the lilies in our yard, her home.
My sisters and myself were very, very saddened by Mimi’s passing; but my mother took it hardest of all. Mimi had been her companion, her friend, her lap warmer, her snuggle buddy, her alarm clock and, we often joked, her favorite child for over two decades. I wanted to comfort my mother; but my protest that it didn’t matter what the (her) Church said, Mimi was with the God/dess, was maybe, not very helpful. It perhaps, only reminded her that in her view, I too am not going to heaven.
