From March 7 to September 30, 2010, the old church of St. John near the convent of St. Mary “in Valle” is hosting the exhibition “The Soul and the World. Sacred art from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century”. Among many other contributions, the catalog offers the short essay “Replicas, copies, sketches and ‘modelletti’: notes on the sidelines of an exhibition”: some of the exhibited artworks (mostly unpublished and from private collections) are treated in it, in order to make the reader reflect on the topic of authenticity of artistic products and on the issue – even more complex – of their reproducibility, including preparatory and original (one or more ...) specimens, sketches and small models, replicas and copies, seriation and forgery.
Dal 7 marzo al 30 settembre 2010 la chiesa di San Giovanni annessa all’antico monastero femminile di Santa Maria in Valle ospita la mostra “L’Anima e il Mondo. Arte sacra dal XIV al XVIII secolo”: il relativo catalogo offre, tra molti altri contributi, il breve saggio “Repliche, copie, bozzetti e ‘modelletti’: appunti a margine di un’esposizione”, nel quale si ripropongono alcune delle opere esposte (perlopiù inedite e appartenenti a collezioni private) allo scopo di fare riflettere il lettore sull’importante tema dell’autenticità dei prodotti artistici e sull’ancor più complessa questione della loro riproducibilità, fra esemplari preparatori e originali (uno o più...), bozzetti e ‘modelletti’, repliche e copie, seriazione e falsificazione.

Part of a special section examining exhibition designs. The writer briefly examines Umberto Riva's design for the exhibition “Vincenzo Scamozzi 1548–1616. Architettura è Scienza,” at the Museo Palladio, Vicenza, Italy, from September 7, 2003, to January 11, 2004. The layout incorporates a simple vocabulary in order to stretch the interior and dilate the duration of the path through the exhibition.

In 1971, the first gallery show presenting the work of the British painter Margaret Harrison was shut down for... more In 1971, the first gallery show presenting the work of the British painter Margaret Harrison was shut down for indecency by the London Police the day after it opened. The drawings and paintings on display, which used American superheroes and other pop culture icons to explore issues of politics and sexual identity, were an intriguing mix of Vietnam War era comics characters (such as Captain America), pop art, underground comix, the fetish art of Eric Stanton, the politics of the era (Women’s Lib and the Anti-War Movement) and her own classical training from the Royal Academy. Stung by the controversy over her first show, she abandoned this work and went on to become one of the pioneers of Feminist art in Britain. In 2009, at the invitation of Intersection for the Arts (San Francisco), Harrison returned to the superhero theme, creating a new series of works in which comics characters interact with famous paintings to investigate issues of power and sexuality. Assembling Narratives: Quilting Impulses in Contemporary Art presentsthe work of six artists—Sabrina Gschwandtner, Karolyn Hatton, Faith Ringgold, Donna Sharrett, John Sims, and Anna Von Mertens—who appropriate quiltmaking as a
symbolic repository of personal and communal experiences.
Even as they borrow the forms and processes of this
traditional craft, they push the conventions of quiltmaking
in new directions by using unconventional materials, by
cross-pollinating different disciplines, or by taking a
decidedly conceptual approach.
