Signing a temporary contract is likely to depend upon various social, cultural and political characteristics, thus it is particularly interesting to investigate this at such a diverse environment as the European Union. Four possible reasons are examined and interpreted in the light of different labour economics theories. These include temporary employment as: a) signal; b) screening mechanism; c) flexible contract; and d) friction of the labour market. For the empirical analysis, micro-data from the European Labour Force Survey are utilized. Personal and socio-economic characteristics, along with national and institutional factors driving each type of temporary employment are identified and scrutinised. Our findings show that temporary employment is segmented into two broad groups; precarious temporaries and temporaries “by choice”.

This article is an attempt to critically review and examine the key points of the debate regarding assimilationism and multiculturalism, while arguing for an interculturalist model of socio-cultural incorporation that reconciles cultural diversity with social cohesion. This paper looks at both European and North American cases and contends that when support for diversity occurs within a framework of social justice and political equality, and when all members of society are permitted to fully participate in the public space, the result is a more cohesive, albeit plural, civic community.

Critical Consumption: Boycotting and Buycotting in Europe
by Luke Yates

However, such analysis often neglects work from the sociology of consumption and social movement studies. This paper argues that consumers express their identity through critical consumption, in the form of a pledge of allegiance to the goals of certain social movements. Cross-national data from the European Social Survey identifies critical consumers as belonging to higher class positions and being generally older, highly educated, and more often women than men. Separating analysis of boycotting from that of buycotting, the positive purchase of goods for ethical or political reasons, suggests that buycotting is more resource-dependent and individualistic than boycotting. Substantial differences are found between the impact of people’s resources in different countries, particularly between Northern and Central European countries and their Southern and Eastern counterparts. The findings thus recommend an approach to consumer politics that remains sensitive to social structural contexts between countries and different forms of consumer participation.

There is, as yet, no agreement in the international debate on what are the most important key competencies. In a Delphi study, experts from Europe (Germany, Great Britain) and Latin America (Chile, Ecuador, Mexico) were asked: Which individual key competencies are crucial for under standing central challenges facing the world society and for facilitating its development towards a more sustainable future? The participants discussed and defined a number of key competencies. These were condensed to twelve key competencies, all of which are considered relevant for sustainable development both in the North and the South. However, the results also reveal some differences between the European and Latin-American percep tions. The key competencies identified here show similarities with other sustainability competence concepts. In addition, they also focus on aspects that so far have not been sufficiently taken into account.

Sèvres as Monument, Europe as Eternal Other: Challenges of Making Turks into Europeans Through the Pedagogy of the Early Turkish Republic

The project to find a place for Turkey in 'Civilization,' mainly meaning Europe, has persisted down to the present. Alongside diplomatic and strategic efforts such as engagement with European organizations, there has continued an internal, cultural effort to nationalize and Europeanize citizens: a project torn between the local and particular, on the one hand, and the supposed/desired universal on the other. In the mode of Greg Starrett’s anthropology of cultural power in Egypt, this paper will analyze Turkey’s efforts by means of a careful reading of official textbooks through the lens of Nietzsche’s concepts of the different uses of history. It will examine in particular the portrayal of Europe and Christianity on the one hand, and the Middle East and Islam on the other, in history textbooks from the 1930s through the 1950s, the period of nation-building in the immediate shadow of Sèvres. The paper will conclude by discussing the implications of this ambiguous project for the sustainability of Turkey's efforts to become more integrated into Europe.

Avrupa’yı Bezdiren Hayalet: Avrupa Anayasası, Bütçe Krizi ve Neoliberal Bütünleşmenin Sınırları

The dilemma, however is rooted in the deeper issues concerning democracy, neoliberalism, and the division of wealth among classes in European society. The draft constitution would have locked in the principles of neoliberalism and guaranteed rights for capital over those of citizens. Beyond the question of the lack of grass roots democracy European social welfare guarantees are threatened. Capitalist accumulation is rendered as a technical question to be determined by technocrats and business enterprises, rather than a political question at the heart of democracy. The vote against the constitution was not a vote against a united and social Europe, but against a Europe united on the basis of the American model of enshrining capitalist accumulation as the be all and end all of human endeavor. The crisis in Europe has revealed the limits to neoliberal integration in Europe.

During the last years, many universities have undertaken activities for implementing Higher Education for Sustainable Development (HESD). Many have asked which key competencies are most relevant for sustainable development and hence should be developed in future-oriented higher education. Different approaches for the selection of sustainability key competencies have been developed, but there is little international agreement in the debate around the most important key competencies. Consequently, this paper asks which individual key competencies are crucial for understanding central challenges facing the world society and for facilitating its development towards a more sustainable future, and thus identifies those competencies which should be fostered through university teaching and learning. The empirical design of the study is related to a Delphi study in which ‘sustainability key competencies’ are defined by selected experts from Europe (Germany, Great Britain) and Latin America (Chile, Ecuador, Mexico). The results show that twelve key competencies crucial for sustainable development can be identified; the most relevant ones are those for systemic thinking, anticipatory thinking and critical thinking.

Objective: To identify attitudinal determinants of fish consumption in Spain and Poland, and to discuss the potential impact of local healthy eating policies in the observed reported frequency of fish consumption.
Design: Repeated survey analysis , multivariate linear regression analysis. Data collected through a questionnaire that included socio-demographics, self-reported anthropometrics, as well as validated items of attitudinal and involvement scales, validated items of knowledge about fish, and behaviours (reported fish consumption).
Setting: Consumer survey in Poland and Spain, 1800 respondents in 2004 and 1815 respondents in 2008.
Results: In Poland, intentions to consume more fish and reported fish consumption increased in the four years period between both surveys, together with objective knowledge regarding fish. In Spain with the exception of subjective knowledge, fish consumption at home and total fish consumption, all attitudinal and involvement scale changes were statistically significant. Multivariate regression revealed that age had a small but significant positive effect in all scales, except for satisfaction with life, fish consumption out of home and subjective health. Satisfaction with life and subjective knowledge were significantly determined by household size. The differences between countries were statistically significant for involvement with health and fish, for intention to eat fish, the general attitudes and objective knowledge regarding fish.
Conclusions: In Poland, a more positive attitude towards fish, and increased levels of knowledge about this product were observed and could partially be attributed to national policy efforts. In Spain, an interesting feature was observed: more people reported choosing fish when eating out in 2008 compared with respondents in 2004. Such a trend suggests that people slowly move towards healthier choices even in the out of home eating.
