Ricoeur in his last works has considered translation as a paradigm of the attitude towards the other, holding the view that the ethical purposes relating to linguistic hospitality are the model for any kind of hospitality. I intend to contrast Balibar’s vanishing mediator with Ricoeur’s concept of linguistic hospitality.

L'apparition de l'étranger au... more La démocratie, dans son versant institutionnel, se méfie des phénomènes migratoires. L'apparition de l'étranger au dedans des frontières d'une communauté qui se donne sa propre loi peut amener le peuple qui la constitue à redouter la perte de sa capacité d'auto-détermination. Il serait cependant réducteur de limiter l'appréciation démocratique de l'étranger à cette seule dimension. Car la démocratie n'est pas qu'une forme de gouvernement, elle est aussi un idéal. En ce sens, elle contient une promesse d'égalitarisme et d'inclusion qui ne peut rester sourde aux demandes d'hospitalité. Toute la complexité est dès lors de proposer une conception de l'accueil qui intègre ces deux composantes constitutives du régime démocratique. En nous appuyant sur les écrits de trois penseurs français – Claude Lefort, Guillaume le Blanc et Étienne Balibar – nous tenterons d'esquisser une telle réponse en arguant que l'étranger, loin de déforcer la démocratie, lui apporte une salutaire part d'indéterminable.

This paper explores the ambiguous nature of the graphic boundary line as a key element in the carto-realist conception... more This paper explores the ambiguous nature of the graphic boundary line as a key element in the carto-realist conception of spatiality. Using examples of the boundary lines (specifically the Line of Tordesillas and the UK border at Stansted Airport) the paper explores the complex and ambiguous nature of boundary lines as carto-graphic representations and concrete spatial practices.
Drawing on Rotman’s analysis of the significance of ‘zero’ to modern semiotics and Wilden’s theorization of digital and analogue communications systems, I argue that the graphic line is the spatial equivalent of a numeric zero – a metasymbolic entity that is empty (the cartographic line, by definition has no magnitude).
