In this paper we consider the kinds of pedagogical engagements a poetic consciousness might invoke. When we reflect on what it might mean to be poetically conscious in moments of teaching, learning, and connecting, what emerges is the possibility of integrating the classroom experience with the everyday of life; such poetically conscious teaching would make connections to the larger web of a person’s experience in the world. To inquire into this possibility, we share our contemplations on our scholarly and personal experiences with poetry, presenting it here as a dis(e)ruptive text in order to invite aesthetic modes of being within the interplay of language and self. Our conversations have evolved over 3 years and have created this in-between space of active disclosure, where, we argue, poetry has offered dis(e)ruptions that celebrate the variations we inhabit in our bodies, personalities, and creative works.

Spacing is an act that constructs relationships, intervals, separations and thus boundaries. The earth has no territories other than those imagined and enforced through acts of territorialisation. A city has its private spaces closed to open access and open spaces that are inscribed with what can or cannot be done. As individuals pass by, stop and talk, or do such mundane things such as meet for coffee, interactional spaces are constructed and de-constructed. There are lines of legitimate connection and passage just as there are lines that cannot be crossed, or can only be crossed under certain conditions. In this special edition, each paper, in its different way, focuses on the spaces that emerge as off-limits, margins, edges, no-places; or on what happens when boundaries become indeterminate, shifting or shifty.

We examined motivations and perceptions among preservice teachers (N=1577) encompassing early childhood, primary and secondary. The Factors Influencing Teaching Choice (FIT-Choice) instrument was translated into Turkish and its construct validity and reliability assessed. Altruistic “social utility values” were the most influential, followed by the desire for a secure job. Intrinsic value and perceived teaching abilities came next, contrasting with higher ratings in Western studies, alongside prior positive teaching and learning experiences. Family flexibility, job transferability and social influences were moderate, and the negative “fallback career” motivation lowest, although not far below the scale midpoint. Science-related teacher candidates scored higher on fallback career, had chosen a teaching career the most recently, and were lower on almost all other teaching motivations, demonstrating a less positive motivational profile. Findings are interpreted in light of the economic development and role of the teaching profession in Turkey. Less adaptive motivations belonging to preservice teachers in scientific fields highlight potential risks and recruitment strategies to optimise teacher quality in those priority fields which further research could fruitfully examine.

It reveals the role of formative and summative assessment methods in Photography. It identifies the differences between the use of sketchbooks, PowerPoint and blogs to track learner progress and for receiving feedback. The research takes into account the views of the learners and their tutors and offers an insight into teaching and learning styles. The aim of the paper is to discover which assessment method best suits Photography and can possibly raise the standards of teaching and learning in the UK.

Towards a Science- and Technology-Based Innovation of Turkey's Educational System

Scholastic achievement viewed through a comparative, international lens shows how aspects of the Turkish educational system contribute to marked differences between Turkish students and their foreign peers. Previous policies and practices have resulted in the current status quo, but innovative, systemic changes based on science and technology can help Turkish schooling keep pace with exceptional growth in economic and business sectors. Projects such as FATİH seek to modernize schools through a large investment in trendy commercial technologies, but focus too heavily on one area while ignoring other interconnected issues throughout the system. This work focuses on how a holistic approach to innovation in the Turkish educational system can be supported through a focus on science and technology.

This scientific report on youth risk behaviors was prepared for the Dominican Republic's Ministry of Education.
We administered a modified YRBS to a nationally representative sample of public high school youth in the Dominican Republic. The survey asked about mental health, sexual risk behaviors, substance use, and violent behavior. Findings are presented at the national level and for each educational district. I analyzed all data and assisted with preparing the report. I also helped present the results to a delegation from the DR's Ministry of Education.
Dr. Juan B. Peña, assistant professor at the Brown School, Washington University in St. Louis, is the prinicpal investigator and first author. The remaining authors are presented alphabetically; contribution is equal: Elián P. Cabrera-Nguyen, Diana Chaves, and Rosa Fernández

This usability pilot study is part of a larger e-text pilot project at Ball State University, the goal of which is to draw conclusions about two e-text platforms, Courseload and the Nook Study. The study includes four classes and a total sample population of 210 students. Study methodology included a literature search, platform evaluation, preliminary student survey, in-person usability testing, final student survey, and professor interviews. Where applicable, statistical tools for determining significance were used.
The most valuable conclusions were drawn about e-text usage in general, and some important observations were made about each of the two platforms. Generally, the Nook Study appeared to be the more usable platform, but suffered from significant technological failings. In addition to navigation (especially for use in math classes) and zoom complaints, , the Courseload platform suffered especially from the broader failing of e-text platforms: that they merely allow computer access to textbooks designed for print. Broad results included a desire for better zoom, screen capture/copy/paste, and interactive features that take advantage of the electronic format. We conclude that the e-text remains immature in terms of the course textbook. Professors tended to strongly dislike the platforms. Students tended to have definite opinions for or against, but no clear consensus. Interestingly, student access to computers and Internet access still posed significant barriers for a minority of students, which would be critical for institutions to address if they adopt e-texts on a wide basis.
