Carvalhomiris brachypterus Maldonado and Ferreira, 1971, its type species, is redescribed and two species are described as new, C. bifurcatus sp. nov. from Ecuador, and C. truncatus sp. nov. from Colombia. Selected external morphological structures of the head, pronotum, metathoracic scent gland efferent area, pretarsus, and egg are documented with scanning electron micrographs for the two new species. Dorsal habitus photographs of macropterous and brachypterous specimens illustrating color variation, line drawings of male and female genitalia of all species, and a key to adults of the species are provided. The potential relationships of Carvalhomiris within Orthotylini are discussed, the genus now being placed in the Zanchius group.
Cordylancistrus santarosensis (Siluriformes: Loricariidae), a new species with unique snout deplatation from the Río Santa Rosa, Ecuador

This species can be distinguished from all other members of the Chaetostoma group by having plates on the tip of the snout (except for a central region at the extreme anterior edge), but lacking plates laterally on the head. This snout plating condition is inter- mediate between the fully plated snout of other Cordylancistrus and the unplated snout of Chaetostoma.
Patterns of extinction risk and threat for marine vertebrates and habitat-forming species in the Tropical Eastern Pacific

To address this gap, complete regional species assemblages of major marine taxa are being progressively assessed against the Categories and Criteria of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The first analysis of entire major components of the biota of a large marine biogeographic region was conducted in the Tropical Eastern Pacific (TEP). It is based on recently completed IUCN Red List assessments for all known species of bony and cartilaginous shorefishes, corals, mangroves, and seagrasses in the TEP. Twelve percent of the greater than 1,300 species assessed are in threatened categories, indicative of elevated extinction risk. Spatial analysis of all assessed taxonomic groups, including previous IUCN Red List assessments for seabirds, marine mammals and marine turtles, highlights specific geographical areas of elevated threatened species richness. The distribution of threatened species in the TEP is primarily linked to areas with high rates of over-fishing, habitat loss and increasing ENSO event impacts, as well as oceanic islands with high stochastic risk factors for endemic species. Species assigned to the highest threat categories have life-history traits that likely decrease their resilience to various regional and site-specific threats. Comprehensive information in the form of IUCN Red List assessments combined with spatial analysis will greatly help to refine both site and species-specific marine conservation priorities in the TEP.

Latin America, for instance, hosts some of the most important biodiversity hotspots in the world. However, this biodiversity is threatened by development processes which lead to environmental degradation and thus a significant loss of biodiversity. In Ecuador, new approaches towards sustainable development with a particular focus on biodiversity conservation and environmental protection have been developed in recent years. Against the background of data on biological diversity in Latin America and a description of conservation endeavours in the Latin-American region, this chapter analyses the Ecuadorian efforts to achieve sustainable development and long-term protection of biological diversity. Positive impacts as well as new challenges and conflicts, which result from these approaches, are identified and discussed.
New Political Spaces and Public Sphere 'Deliberativeness' in Ecuador, 1822-2011

Widely adopted decentralisation policies have increased the significance of local citizen participation in Latin America, especially with regard to ‘new political spaces’, or spaces for citizen–government engagement distinct from both electoral democracy and non-electoral political activism. Since new political spaces tend to employ ‘deliberative democratic’ methods of decision making, their prospects depend to a considerable extent on the extent to which surrounding ‘public spheres’ enable or constrain deliberation. This paper focuses on the specific case of Ecuador, drawing upon theories of deliberative democracy and the public sphere to assess the likely prospects for new political spaces in Ecuador through an examination of the key aspects of Ecuadorian politics and society since independence from Spain in 1822.

This, togheter with the fact that the ceramic complexes bear very little formal resemblance to each other, is used to suggest that there is no compeling reason to infer a connection or casual relationship between the early technologies. It is argued, rather that an explanation for the early occurrences of these two complexes is more likely to be found in changing economic and social context occurring in the South American tropics during the seventh and sixth milennia B.P. which place a positive cultural value on ceramic production.
