Teachers are and will continue to enter increasingly diverse classrooms (Walton, Baca & Escamilla, 2003). Effective schools research shows that when schools have a “clear and focused mission” that values equity and diversity, as well as “high expectations for all students,” student achievement is positively impacted (ICEE, 2001). However, often teachers have low expectations for students of color and from low socio-economic groups (Delpit, 1995). Despite research supporting the premise that all children can learn, often teachers embrace these and other attitudes; and as a result, some children are left behind.
The purpose of this study was to explore diversity education perceptions among faculty/administrators teaching in the Idaho State University (ISU) College of Education (COE), and thereby determine where we are, and where we need to go, in an ongoing effort to improve teacher and advanced professional preparation.
Relationships among different geographical groups, agro-morphology, fatty acid composition and RAPD marker diversity in Safflower ( Carthamus tinctorius )
by Awais Khan
Patterns of geographical diversity, and the relationship between agro-morphological traits and fatty acid composition... more Patterns of geographical diversity, and the relationship between agro-morphological traits and fatty acid composition were assessed for 193 safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) accessions representing forty countries. Accessions were assigned to eight groups based on geographical proximity. Cluster and Principal Component analyses were performed to assess patterns of diversity among the accessions and to select the most distant accessions from each of eight groups for analysis of randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) markers. There was a large amount of diversity for agro-morphological traits, fatty acid composition, and RAPD markers. Most correlations among different traits were rather low. Plant height showed a positive correlation with days to flowering (r = 0.63**). Palmitic acid was positively correlated with stearic acid and oleic acid values, and negatively correlated with linoleic acid (P < 0.01). Oleic acid and linoleic acid showed a strong negative correlation (r = −0.89**). The first three principal components together explained 59% of the variation, however, neither principal component analysis (PCA) nor marker analysis revealed a clear relationship between diversity pattern and geographical origin. Accessions from some geographical regions tended to group together, such as accessions from South Western Asia, Central Western Europe, and the Mediterranean region. The correlation between the morphological matrix and the genetic matrix based on RAPD markers was not significant (r = 0.027). Wide diversity in safflower germplasm indicates a considerable potential for improving this crop for both agronomic and quality traits.

Australia has a very diverse and rapidly expanding number of people for whom the Goddess, however She is understood, is significant. The 2006 census revealed that there were over 30,000 Pagans or followers of other earth-based religious traditions in Australia and, given the way in which religions are classified in the census, this is undoubtedly a serious underestimation. We await the findings of the 2011 census with great interest.
Prior to European settlement in Australia, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples followed their own rich spiritual beliefs, which were based on the forces of nature, a reverence for the land and its creatures, and the influence of ancestral spiritual beings. Recently, non-indigenous Australians have become increasingly interested in the indigenous connection to the land and indigenous spirituality.
While it is important not to appropriate indigenous culture, Goddess women and men in Australia are keen to express their spirituality in ways that are relevant to this land and to the Australian culture. We recognize the need to become more attuned to the ways of Australia, to her seasons and her natural cycles, and we can learn from the experiences of indigenous peoples, garnered from millennia of living on and with this land.

Of the 263 species of mammals recorded from Thailand, Lekagul and McNeely (1977) list 35% from the order chiroptera, 26% rodentia and 13 % carnivora. Biogeographically, Thailand lies in both the Sundaic and Indochinese subregions. The region south of the Isthmus of Kra (latitude 11o40’N) and peninsular Malaysia is considered as the Malayan faunal division, while the northern
part is within the Indochinese subregion (Corbet and Hill, 1992). This report presents the results of bat surveys conducted in protected areas in Thailand and also provides additional knowledge on the status of bats in certain areas. During the present survey, ecological observations were recorded for 57% of the individuals netted (comprising nine bat species) regarding their breeding status and development. About 28% of the total number of bats from seven species were at various stages of reproduction.

We present an assessment of the diversity of Bornean bats at two contrasting elevations (119 m and 787 m) in Kubah National Park surveyed between August and December 2006. Three hundred and eighty-two individuals of bats from 26 species representing six families were recorded using 20 mist nets and three harp traps. The most commonly caught bat was Hipposideros cervinus (Gould, 1863) (n = 168) followed by Penthetor lucasi (Dobson, 1880) (n = 55), and they were also the most commonly detected species at low and high elevation sites, respectively. This survey yielded the first recorded specimen of Pipistrellus cuprosus Hill and Francis, 1984 for Sarawak. Analysis of daily cumulative capture rates indicated that further effort at these sites may not yield additional species if sampling techniques and locations are maintained. Species diversity index of Megachiroptera was higher at high elevations (H’ = 0.567 versus H’ = 0.466) whereas the species diversity index of Microchiroptera was greatest at low elevations (H’= 0.905 vs H’ = 1.225).

We present a theoretical model on the processes that mediate and moderate the diversity-performance relationship. Past research on this topic – for example the categorization elaboration model (van Knippenberg et al., 2004) – has often focused on information elaboration as mediator. Complementing this cognitive perspective, we propose that group diversity can also stimulate group members to engage with each other emotionally, resulting in higher levels of empathy – an emotional state which arises from the comprehension and apprehension of fellow group members’ emotional state. Empathy, in turn, is likely to enhance performance through processes within a single group member and through processes between group members. At the core of the model lies the proposition that group- as well as individual-level empathy mediate the relationship between diversity of organizational units and the performance of individual members and groups at large (multilevel mediation). Furthermore, we specify moderating conditions for the relationship between diversity and empathy. Diversity beliefs and diversity climates are introduced as second-order moderators.

Pauline Universalism: Anachronism or Reality?
Published in Journal of Asia Adventist Seminary 14.1 (2011): 65-‐‑77
Are we able to attribute a modern concept such as universalism (in the sense of the opposite to particularism) to Paul... more Are we able to attribute a modern concept such as universalism (in the sense of the opposite to particularism) to Paul in the formation of his communities, or is such an idea hopelessly anachronistic? This paper suggests that although Paul’s universalism does not fully conform to modern definitions, there is a universalistic dimension to his formation of the ἐκκλησία that was radical within his own culture in both Jewish and Hellenistic terms. Nevertheless, there were some first-century social and philosophical currents that would have provided some implicit support for his application of universalistic principles. However, the roots of Paul’s approach are to be found not so much in Hellenistic philosophical currents, but rather in his understanding of divine convenantal condescension. These considerations allow us some insights to understanding the status of different genders, ethnicities, and socio-economic classes in the Pauline communities.
