Landow. The online presence of Australian poet Derek Motion is examined in order to demonstrate the distinction between the physicalised archive and the virtual electronic space of hypertexts, and to explicate some of the issues of legitimacy that exist around electronic texts
Cyberdylan: A Poet in the Electric Age
This was originally presented as a paper at the Dylan Thomas Symposium, The Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea, in July 2000. It was subsequently printed, in a slightly different form and under a different title, in The Times Literary Supplement:

Caroline Bergvall’s practice addresses what I call the iterative turn in contemporary culture. This turn encompasses poets’ use of pre-existing material and theorists’ treatment of gender, culture, and text as constituted by repeated acts. Bergvall extends Stein’s iterative writing into other forms of iteration, including performance; translation; presentations in multiple media or versions; archival, serial and conceptual forms; and the rewriting of historical texts. By placing bodily gesture at the intersection of multiple linguistic and technological mediations, Bergvall offers an alternative to existing iterative theories––one that recognizes not just the infinite possibilities of iteration but also each singularly embodied instantiation.

It is grounded in a belief that this is an arena where poetry belongs and where it can motivate change because both language and form are freighted with the political. It therefore enquires whether, in an age of simultaneity (as Fredric Jameson has argued), linear narrative is either possible or productive as a method of encountering and describing the events that surround us in the moment.
