Design and Geographically Liberated Difference

Although this concept is known in the domains of cultural studies and economics, very little has been written on its effect and understanding within design, especially industrial design. Industrial design has vast influence on the production and distribution of products across the globe from small scale to mass production of millions of units. The mechanisms by which design influences the evolution of cultures through the concept of geographically liberated difference are important for future development. Research by the authors indicates parallel streams of both digital and analogue methods supporting successful models of geographically liberated difference in design practice. Examples of these approaches are discussed to uncover the operable mechanisms and arguments concerning the future value and influence of this feature of globalisation.
Law of the Worlds - Towards an Inter-Systemic Theory

In the course of developing this theory he has, however, reformulated or changed the status of a number of central system theoretical concepts, including the concepts of (co-)evolution, interpenetration and function. At first glance, these changes appear to be relatively inconsequential but at second glance they amount to a radical reformulation of systems theory because the focus is systematically shifted away from system internal processes and towards inter-systemic processes. Although Amstutz departs from a legal perspective, his theory is in fact projecting a mirror image of the wider society. Amstutz has, in other words, not just developed a theory of world law, but rather a central contribution to a novel inter-systemic theory of society as such.

Abstract
Based on the study of the East Greek imitation artifacts uncovered in Macedonia and the historical context of Asia Minor, this paper aims to investigate the role of trade and migration as the main agents of cultural transfer of the Ionian influences in the northern Aegean during the second half of the sixth century BC. This paper will also focus on the social changes that occurred within the Greeks cities of Macedonia and that might have encouraged the cultural borrowings and the establishment of a local “ionizing” koine in the region. The Persians conquest of Asia Minor in 545 BC probably caused the mobility, forced or voluntary, of several craftsmen, traders and families which could have facilitated the dissemination, the introduction and the maintenance of the East Greek influences in Macedonia. Because of the wide distribution of the East Greek imitation material throughout the territory, it is legitimate to believe that local artisans also participated to the production of these objects by adopting the eastern Greek models inside their workshops. The receptivity of the East Greek influences and the abandonment of the former Iron Age traditions by the local craftsmen find explanation in the desire to fill functional needs created by a combination of economic, demographic and social factors which generated new patterns of consumption in the region.

The present essay outlines a project, which aims to catalogue and tap the potential of medieval German manuscripts in the collections of both church and secular libraries and archives in Romania. The project complements current efforts to catalogue and explore medieval German manuscripts in Eastern European
countries. At the same time, the project prepares the ground for a regionally oriented literary history of Transylvania. Here, too, the aim is to build on current trends in medieval German studies in particular. Instead of a concept of literary history based almost exclusively on individual authors and their work, these trends advocate a literary historiography that turns to regional factors and manuscript transmission in describing literary activity in a particular area
Making sense of the Social Forum: On the local framing of a fashionable global symbol

A growing body of literature on the forums concerns its function as a transnational venue for civil society and a global symbol for resistance against neoliberalism. However, little empirical research is carried out on the local meanings of the widespread SFs. This article reports on a case study on the organizational process of a local forum in a Swedish town. The analysis focuses on intra-coalitional interaction among activists from the labor movement, Attac and a local cultural institution. The importance of considering local framing processes and the often-neglected influence of fashion, when studying the emergence of social forums is emphasized. Findings show how the dichotomy the Old vs. the New became crucial in the framing process. Framed as a novelty contrasted with “old” socialist values, the SF was rejected by the labor movement activists as just another expression of a contemporary neoliberal trend of depolitization. Implications for the study of the social forum phenomenon are discussed.

In this article, the authors analyze the large-scale project of establishing folk development colleges in Tanzania in the 1970s and 1980s, by emphasizing the ways in which Swedish popular educators have described the folk development college project. Theoretically, the article is based on a postcolonial framework, highlighting the continuing importance of the legacies of colonialism in today’s society. One of the main conclusions in the article is that in the process of “exporting” the idea of popular education to other parts of the world, there is an ongoing formation of national self-images in contrast to images of the Other, where there is a constant risk of reproducing ideas from a colonial past.
