Dispute Avoidance Processes (DAPs), such as Dispute Review Boards (DRBs), Dispute Adjudication Boards (DABs) and... more Dispute Avoidance Processes (DAPs), such as Dispute Review Boards (DRBs), Dispute Adjudication Boards (DABs) and Dispute Resolution Advisors (DRAs) are now a common feature of construction projects around the world. However, Australia has been slow to embrace DAPs. There is no history of DABs or DRAs being used in this country and only modest use of DRBs. The failure of the Australian construction industry to embrace DAPs is surprising given the proven international track record of DAPs in ensuring that construction projects reach completion with no outstanding disputes. One possible explanation for the lack of uptake of DAPs in Australia may be the complete absence of any provisions relating to DAPs in any Australian standard form contract. This article considers how provisions relating to DAPs have been incorporated into standard form contracts in other jurisdictions, whether Australia should follow suit, and if so, how this could be achieved.

The main aim of this research is to review the potential of integrating the quality management system within the context of construction management. The methodologies adapted for this study are interviews with construction key personnel. The importance of the interviews will help to justify the potential of integrating within the context of construction management. The main obstacles that have been identified is the level of understanding of personnel about the full content of the quality management system itself. It is found that, in ensuring the successful objectives of company, the implementation of quality management system in construction industry will assist the industry to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the organization management system.

As the EU expands eastward, it absorbs millions of highly skilled knowledge workers and opens opportunities for western European organisations to capitalise on this workforce. The migration of these skilled workers is a macro-exercise in eastern European knowledge management, and could have far-reaching implications at the regional, industry and organisational levels. This paper explores the context and implications of knowledge worker movement across fading borders.

Collection of accurate, complete and reliable field data is not only essential for active management of construction... more Collection of accurate, complete and reliable field data is not only essential for active management of construction projects involving many tasks, such as material tracking, progress monitoring and quality assurance tasks; but also for facility/infrastructure management during the service life of facilities and infrastructure systems. Limitations of current manual data collection approaches in terms of speed, completeness and accuracy, and implications of these limitations for construction management practice are discussed by many researchers. Advancements in field data capture technologies (such as smart tags, laser scanners, and embedded sensors) enable collecting, storing and reusing field data accurately, completely and reliably. We show that while these technologies are capable of streamlining the associated processes, their performances differ from the manufacturers’ specifications when utilized on construction sites due to issues, such as interference, data reading range, data accuracy, interoperability of hardware and software, and memory limitations. In addition, while these technologies eliminate some non-value adding tasks associated with corresponding project management processes, they can also add new tasks that need to be performed prior to, during, or after the utilization of a technology at the field. Hence, a thorough understanding of both the technological capabilities and process implications of these technologies is needed to be able to utilize them effectively during construction and service life of facilities.

This research discusses the SECI Model of Knowledge Conversion as it relates to the 10 Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) that are now part of the European Union (EU). The socio-economic conversion from socialism to capitalism of these societies is unique in historical precedence, whereby utilising the contextual models in knowledge conversion are applicable for understanding the implications of such a phenomenon. The results indicate that there is a unique set of variables that need to be considered within this context and for future similar situations.

This paper provides an evaluation of the literature pertaining to the autopoietic, connectionist, and cognitivist epistemological paradigms. These paradigms exist at the individual and organisational level through diametrically opposed functionalist versus interpretive and integrative socio-technical knowledge management perspectives. The alignments of individual and organisational epistemologies are essential to the effectiveness of a knowledge management system. Knowl-edge management should consider the roots of knowledge theoretically in order to share or man-age knowledge dissemination successfully in organisations. The term ‘knowledge sharing’ has been emphasised and discussed comprehensively through its epistemological influential factors. This paper concludes the development of a Knowledge Management Epistemological Synthesis Model (KM-ES Model) and a comprehensive discussion and conclusion section focussing on the implications of epistemological influences on the knowledge management system of an organisa-tion. The results from this study provide both researchers and academicians with a clear under-standing of the interplay between epistemologies and a foundation for establishing an effective organisational knowledge management system.
